Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Oh no - particulate filters coming to petrol engines as well

    Following on from Mercedes-Benz's recent announcement that it will start fitting particulate filters to their petrol engines from next year, VW have decided to follow their lead. Well I suppose this is one way to make back some of the money they will lose as a result of the emissions scandal anyway:ermm:.

    Here's a novel idea: why not go back to indirect injection petrol engines, if we're serious about making cars cleaner for our lungs? They are the cleanest of the lot, no particulates whatsoever (a direct injection petrol produces particulates just like a diesel does - though obviously a diesel pollutes a lot more PM than a petrol and then there is all the extra NOx they are legally allowed pollute on top of that). The alternative is hybrids (either traditional or plug-in) for any urban buyer, and unless there's massive grants, there is no way the low mileage urban buyer is ever going to get back his or her money on one of those, especially now that CO2 emissions for petrol engines have come down so much.

    As a matter of interest, how does the method used for injecting petrol into the cylinders affect whether particulates are produced or not?

    Would they be less troublesome in a petrol given that the engine gets up to temp faster than diesel?

    Apart from the coking of intake valves and sounding like a diesel and producing actual pollution for the sake of bringing a car down a CO2 band. Maybe.
