Probably a stupid question but I thought Cav riding the team pursuit? That not why he left the tour early?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,343 ✭✭✭Daroxtar

    That was tense!!

    Brilliant to watch.

Some effort by the 3rd placed GB rider in the finish to close the gap he let go with a poor changeover.

Cav thought he was riding the pursuit as well

Some reports that I'm refusing to warmup tonight at the velodrome 😂A bit early when I'm racing Sunday! Good luck to my teammates! Smash it!

    was that wiggins?

    edit - no.

Cav was never riding the pursuit. As Wiggo has just said the 4 guys have been training together for a year. Cav was reserve and would only ever have ridden if one of the others had to drop out for some reason

He's only ever been lined up for the Omnium

No, Wiggins was gone at that stage

Is Wiggins also in the omniuon with cav

Did the BBC interview lady just try to thump Sir Steve Redgrave? 'Oi, mister, I wanna interview Wiggo!!!!!'

Happy for the Mod - well done.

Not so subtle dig at Cavendish there by Wiggins in his BBC interview. He credited the calibre of his teammates who - he said - don't get the credit they deserve "because they are not big road stars" (presumably referring to Cavendish)

no, wiggins was lead rider over the line (god bless sky plus!) :)

Only one rider per nation in the Omnium. I'm pretty sure that's the last time we'll see Wiggins competing at anything approaching this level. He may do the London 6 day but if he does I'm guessing that will be his swansong.

Only 3 spokes for Kenny. Will be interesting to see if Skinner does the same
Kenny is pretty light, I think 5 spokes are needed for bigger guys

I think he just means that generally track specialists don't get the coverage, publicity or exposure road cyclists do.

As I said Skinner was also on 3 spokes, and only the Team GB guys went with that option. However their rims were quite a bit deeper than the 5 spokes

EDIT - just checked back and Kenny was on 5 spokes for the London Olympics and the Worlds in London earlier this year

Well that was suspensful - a bit behind almost to the end, then a transient worrying gap, recovery, win and world record :D

Ok , so what's the event he won recently with cav at the worlds? Or was that a six day event also

No he won the Madison with Cavendish at the Worlds, that's not an Olympic event, Track cycling got a load of events culled at the 2012 Olympics.

meanwhile swimming has many duplicate distances where you can win medals. imagine a cycling race where you have to cycle backwards!
I see it as a failure from the UCI, I doubt swimming is a bigger global sport yet they have more events at the olympics. I'd love to see the 1km tt back. the madison is also exciting

They had the same number of medals in London as they had in Beijing and now in Rio. 10 medals and one of the problems is there's an overall limit to medals and participants across all Cycling disciplines (which was how Forstermann ended up being chosen for the MTB team last time - he could switch to track and became a reserve for the Team Sprint)

What happened was they moved from 7 men's and 3 women's events in Beijing (when the Madison was in the Olympics and Cav and Wiggins were GBR's team) to 5 events for each. It ended up being skewed towards sprinters with 3 of the 5 being sprint events (Sprint, Team Sprint and Keirin). The other event that was dropped was the IP with the only "endurance" events becoming the Team Pursuit and Omnium

I believe there may be talk of bringing the Madison back at the expense of the Omnium for Tokyo

The problem is swimming attracts much more interest from the US, where all the TV money is. Swimming and Track & Field have been seen as the core Olympic events and trying to move medals from either is likely to prove difficult.

It's the IOC and not the UCI that limited the medals. We could get more on the track, but then would need to drop some from MTB or BMX (track events were dropped to allow BMX in in the first place)

Where it is now is that events such as track cycling are having to use the Olympics as a showcase for their other events. However the restriction in Olympic events has resulted in similar limitations in races within the World Cup, with only Olympic events being guaranteed. That makes qualification for the Worlds in the likes of the TT and IP both messy and costly as teams have to be sent to all corners of the globe to gain ranking points

    2 sessions on Saturday.

The first starts at 2pm our time with Shannon McCurly due to race in the Kierin which will conclude tomorrow evening. The Men's sprint will continue through to the semi final stage in the evening and the Women's pursuit will progress to the medal races in the later session starting at 8pm

Nice way to sign out so ... seems like a genuinely good guy and a character that cycling will miss!

Time for the IOC to increase the amount of medals so.

Pretty sure he is racing London 6 with Cavendish.

Cav's definitely racing and they were certainly suggesting teaming up for London. It's at the end of October (and I have my ticket!). I suspect Wiggins may hardly touch a bike between now and then though if he is going to be hanging up his boots anyway....

Wiggins told Sporza he was doing Gent 6 in November. Could be worth it for the appearance fees.
