Its the local cinema for a large surrounding area. Using public transport to get to the cinema is not something I have ever done nor will ever do. It's just one of those activities you put as little effort into as possible.

Public transport ends before the film

But people come from all over for the cinema. Most areas don't have one or have one with small screens. It's not just locals that use it by a long shot.

We used to use the one in dundrum even though we live very close to the one in tallaght. Liffey valley is next nearest.

I'd rather travel for a nice cinema but I wouldn't be bothered paying so much for the parking.

As its beside the motorway I can be there from Killiney in less than 10 minutes. Bray can take longer and Dun Laoighre can also be a longer drive .

Dundrum has a huge catchment area in South Dublin and North Wicklow. The alternatives are the city centre (much more expensive parking), Carrickmines (free parking but poor selection of clothes shops), Liffey Valley and Blanch (significantly longer drive, you'll end up spending the extra money on fuel anyway).

But you could nearly say the whole of ireland is dundrums catchment area since people come from all over ireland to shop. And in case of of Blanch most people coming from the southside will have to pay the toll.

New cinemas are planned for Cherrywood and Carrickmines, so that will inevitably hit the one at Dundrum.

Maybe they will start giving free parking as part of a cinema ticket.

2020 till cherrywood...thats 3 years of cleaning up

The last film starts tomorrow night at 9:25 and finishes around 11:15. The last southbound luas passes Dundrum at 00:55, the last northbound luas passes Dundrum at 00:45 giving you time not only to get out of the cinema but even to have a sneaky pint after.

Why would anyone go from southside to Blanch to shop?

If you visit the Cinema in the Square, they validate your parking. If you take in a film and have something to eat that' could be a saving of €12 for a 3.5 hour trip compared to Dundrum

Same with the cinema in DL I think it's the same company

paid parking was a condition of planning permission AFAIK. Imagine how much more traffic there would be without it and using it for luas park and ride etc...

to be honest plenty way to get to dundrum by just walking a little public transport links with luas are good, its very urban so traffic is bad enough without giving free parking also.

DOes anyone know if car park profits are shared in anyway or all absorbed by shopping centre owners?

They're the only out of town centre that charge for parking, despite none of them having alternative parking nearby.

Blanch has a free multi-storey among others
    Liffey Valley is free
The Square is free for 2hrs
    Pavilions SC free for 2hrs

    vote with feet / wheels

Dundrum is much more urban than any of those being inside the m50 and all

What? Dundrum is as "far out" as any of those - unless you're really counting the width of the M50 as major differentiator - and (IMO anyway) offers a lot less than certainly the first 3 listed.. certainly nothing that warrants paying for the "privilege" of parking in the place.

So in a good couple of years, there will be cinemas in Cherrywood and Carrickmines as well as the ones we have already in Dundrum and Stillorgan.

Surely one of these fours is going to suffer greatly and possibly not last. My guess would be Stillorgan. Dundrum will be fine as long as parking doesn't go over the roof

there is also planning permission for one on multi storey car park in st stephens green shopping centre, that would put some dent into dundrum. Has to be the most ridiculous goldmine for a cinema location wise...

Are they removing the RCSI car park? That's a goldmine in itself.

in both articles, they just say to be built on top of shopping centre, I think its to be built on top of the car park...

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/st-stephens-green-shopping-centre-cinema-scaled-back-to-nine-screens-633193.html

    http://www.irishtimes.com/business/commercial-property/st-stephen-s-green-centre-revamp-to-begin-soon-1.2455012

that shopping centre has such potential, particularly given the imminent luas cross city completion... do the refurb and cinema on top and with cross city, has the potential to draw in a significant amount more footfall...
