So I got on to Irish Rail on Twitter after yet another row about bike bookings with a busybody member of staff. So I got on to Irish Rail on Twitter after yet another row about bike bookings with a busybody member of staff. It turns out the reason (one anyway) that the bike spaces are always booked but there are no actual bikes is -

If a foot passenger books seat C9 or C13 then the bike spaces disappear from the booking system, although they haven't selected 'bicycle space needed'.

Irish Rail confirmed and replied that they "are currently looking into improvement with further system development." - they've had bike booking since 2011...

The system is indeed crap. You book a seat, and your bike is then in the very last carriage anyway. Why they need to assign certain seats is a mystery.
