Looking at purchasing a car from a garage in the Uk (bermingham). Has anyone used the RAC vehicle inspection before and is it worth while or useful given i know nothing about cars? The car im looking at, the garage offers AA check and 3 month warranty with it.

I've done it recently. Great service if a little pricey. First time I had it done it raised a lot of red flags on a car I was going to see so didn't bother. Second time got a good report on the car and ended up buying it.

I got at AA inspection of an XC90 in England a few years ago. Turned out to be a waste of money. Reported a non existent problem with the auto gearbox. (Some diagnostic faults were showing but these disappeared once re-set.). The car had a full service history and was being sold by a reputable dealer so I bought it anyway and had no problems. The rest of the AA report was full of possible issues that anyone could have written.

General advice though on buying in the UK is to go to a big car supermarket- full histories, warranties and no issues with outstanding finance etc.
