The poor civil servants in the department of foreign affairs will be knackered with all that travelling between Egypt and Brazil.

Makes a change from those Egyptian ones.
He brings a very positive energy to the whole team which rubs off on everyone. As a long term, tireless, and selfless servant to Irish athletes, we may be sure that Mr Hickey will be assisting the authorities in their investigation as fully as possible, and his only thought will be to get back to representing Ireland for the remainder of the games.

    And we all laughed ...

Selfless would be one where he didn't pick up such nice daily expenses.
I hope not. Touts provide a very valuable service, oiling the market of supply and demand. Very often, its the only way I can get tickets. Touts just show that tickets were too cheap to begin with. More power to them I say.

Ahh I see why you are such a fan and apologist for pat hickey.

Doesn't your buddy pat supply you with tickets or are these tickets for the sports he hasn't got his greasy fingers on ?
Better call his sidekick mr delaney.

Update 1.35pm: Brazilian Police have said they have evidence Mr Hickey was part of the scheme that saw OCI tickets for the games in the hands of THG

I wonder how The Rape of Ludraman will spin that ?

EDIT: sorry Nicolas Cage hadn't seen your post above.

I am not allowed discuss …

Don't the Brazilians know that the OCI is holding an inquiry?
Surely they should wait for the findings. :)

Isn't Pat Hickey tight with John Delaney. John will be desperately distancing himself.

Summary of Sinead O' Carroll on Twitter : Hickeys' wife told police he had left the country after meeting Shane Ross. They found him in an adjoining room.

    This is comedy gold.

Garda trying to get him but no extradition treaty. I say let the Brazilians deal with it as it's happened there.

Regardless of the ins and outs of the particular case, doesn't it not all seem very weird that this is all coming out.

I mean, does anybody think that this sort of stuff isn't rife across a large number of countries. Hell, even the awarding of the games is open to many cries of corruption.

It just seems strange that this is being made such a deal over in Brazil

So, Pat was our "Hide 'n Seek" Olympic representative. Eliminated in first round, however.

Really shows up the bull**** nature of inquiries that we seem to be very fond of over here.

I guess the organisers need something to deflect from poor crowds booing silver medalists. This ticket thing is just a perfect excuse.

Not really, its the originals eejits fault for getting caught then it snowballed cus as someone else posted earlier its likely he sang like a canary for them due to being effectively a bagman and there had to be higher ups involved which the cops would be a lot happier to get to.

Its deffinitely rife across other countries without a doubt its just we have the criminals stupid enough to get caught

See, thats my take on it aswell. Not to deflect from the crappiness of it all, but all of a sudden Brazil reckons reselling tickets is a major offence and the IOC thinks possible corruption and infiltration of the ideals of the Olympics by unscrupulous businessmen is a terrible scourge and needs to be tackled?

Something is very fishy about everything to do with this.

Could very well be some sort of smoke screen to deflect away from the fact Rio is a sh1thole, and it's olympics will forever be remembered for being unready, corrupt, under attended and disastrously planned.

Now, to be fair, the chap selling the tickets was caught first, so i think we can say he reached the final heats.

I mean this is a live Rio-Olympics story, regarding Olympic tickets, so why wouldn't it be headline news now?

He stepped out of line. Pay back time!
Hickey, who is also the President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), said he was “shocked and concerned on many levels” by the letter.

“I have to question on what authority the USA and Canadian Anti-Doping agencies prepared their letter and what mandate they have to lead an international call for a ban of another nation in the Olympic family,” said Hickey.

In the grand scheme this is storm in a teacup stuff.
    A bit of ticket reselling?
Its hardy crime of the century.
Brazil's criminal investigations agencies would be better focused on matters closer to home.

The amount of people on here posting that they hope Hickey rots in jail is interesting considering he hasn't been convicted of anything yet.

It's a rule to do with the Games.
Illegal since 2003 to sell tickets for a higher price

Unlike in the UK6, Brazil has a specific law (the Estatuto do Torcedor 2003) which prohibits tickets for sporting events from being sold at a price higher than face value. Anybody caught committing this criminal offence can face 1 to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to £390,000.7

It is also illegal to supply or facilitate the distribution of tickets for sale at a price that is higher than face value. The penalty for doing so is 2 to 4 years in prison and a fine of up to £390,000.8

This is true, but it is a symptom of what is probably a larger problem and I'm glad the process, (and Hickey, who has been the subject of a lot of accusations) is now going to be the subject of an investigation.

Are you a pal of Hickey's, why do you care?

I think most people have been less than impressed with Hickey. He refused to co-operate with Shane Ross when he went to speak with him about this. He also stuck his oar in when WADA recommended that Russia should get a blanket ban because their drug cheating was widespread and state sanctioned, Hickey goes out of his way and jumps in to defend Russia? And now this comical debacle where he tries to evade being arrested.

Corruption appears to be rife in the Olympics, drug cheating, refs cheating. Hickey probably thought he was untouchable.

What's your reasons for being an apologist for him?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,759 ✭✭✭Winterlong

I had a wee jig of joy at the news. No pussy footing around by the brazillian police. Hopefully now we will start getting some answers and not the usual protectionism.
I wonder will he now be seeking help from the Irish government....years after he boasted how he was bigger than any minister.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭Koobcam

This is fantastic, I'd say Shane Ross is a happy man right now. Goes to Brazil to meet Hickey, gets told to f@ *k off and a couple of days later, the cops come knocking on his hotel room, to be told he's left the country, except he hasn't left, he's in another room, the cops find him, throw him in the slammer and do a perp walk with his passport and credentials. Brilliant stuff. It's also fascinating to look at the links between Hickey and Eastern Europe ggiven what's allegedly been happening with the boxing and the link between that and the European games in Azerbaijan, story in the Guardian a few weeks back if anyone cares to google it.
