Password protected files?

This one seems harder to do than I thought. Surely there's an easy free downloadable program (like DimScreen) that'll do the job. So can anyone tell me of a program that'll allow you to password protect the files on your PC. It was quite a while back when I tried it before, so I can't remember what version it was, but I'd a lot of difficulty.

Anyone please?

That one immediately reminds me of the hassle I got into before!

After googling, may I ask, at the risk of being rude;

"VeraCrypt is an open-source freeware utility used for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE). It can create a virtual encrypted disk within a file or encrypt a partition or (under Microsoft Windows except Windows 8 with UEFI or GPT) the entire storage device with pre-boot authentication."

If you used Truecrypt before then Veracrypt is derived from Truecrypt. The interface is very similar.

Veracrypt is used to create a virtual disk. A password and/or keyfile is used to protect access the virtual disk and mount it making it appear as another hard disk to the system.

Anything saved to the virtual disk is automatically encrypted and anything opened from the virtual disk is automatically decrypted - the encryption and decryption happens on the fly without any further user action.

UEFI and GPT are the low level code run during start up (before loading windows or another operating system) and a standard for the layout or partition of physical media.

Both are likely on systems shipped with windows 8 or newer operating system. You cannot encrypt the whole disk on a system that uses UEFI and GPT but you can still create a virtual encryoted disk or encrypt individual partitions.

if you are trying to password protect microsoft office files you dont need another programme, you can password protect in office itself.
