Hard get excited about the PSG game when ultimately it means nothing. Never gonna win CL, money earned may or not be spent next year.

    Meh.

    Thanks for sharing.

Have you ever thought about maybe supporting another team? Maybe even finding a pastime that brings you more enjoyment, and less of that meh feeling? I can help you choose, if you'd like.

My favourite European game at Highbury (that I attended) was the 1-0 CWC semi final win against PSG back in 94... brilliant atmosphere all night at that one... would love a repeat of that, 1-0 to The Arsenal... I had been at the Standard Liege game earlier in the tournament & we had been 7-0 up from the away leg so it was akin to a friendly.... still won it 3-0 mind... so wasn't sure what to expect at the semi final, but the fans were fantastic that night, one of the loudest crowds I ever had the fortune to be part of at Highbury.

Only winning matters to me to be honest.
    Who remembers who came second?

Tbf Atletico have been really unlucky but I get your point. I'd like to see a team try to win it at the very least. We've been piss poor in this competition for years now 06 aside.

In fairness, Monaco aside, the teams that have put us out have been top 4 in europe. Not many teams have faced the quality of opposition we have in the knockout stages

Because we bottle it in the group stages against weak opposition. There's no desire for 1st place, everyone settles for second.

So everyone wants to finish second. No wonder The Honey Monster is giving up.

Fair point but you would think Wenger and/or the team might have actually learned something from the games against the top opposition too. What we really have is a recipe for failure and performances lacking in any real energy.

Loved that kit. It was the first away shirt I bought.

Well yeah, they do. They all probably want to finish 1st too but playing weakened teams, resting players and putting in sh1tty performances against weak teams that we should beat no problem all contribute to us finishing 2nd every year.

You'd think we'd learn and push for 1st by playing our best possible XI and not underestimating the weaker sides but alas, that is too much to ask apparently.

There's also weighing up the Premier League.

Example is we play Chelsea next Saturday, then Basel 4 days later, then Burnley away 4 days after that. Do we play our strongest team for the first two, then hope a second string team beats Burnley away? Do we just play our strongest team 3 times in a week?

sure with that kind of thinking, what's the point of any one it?

Shur only 5 or 6 teams have the potential to win it. We certainly don't.
Its a cup competition anything can happen. There have been plenty of upsets over the years

So much negativity on here. Every Arsenal fan should be looking forward to tonights game against one of the best sides in Europe. It will give us a good tester to where we are at this season in Europe. Personally I think we have a better chance at European glory than winning the league this season. Looking forward to seen Xhaka tonight, I think he is bred for the big European nights, hiss erray of passing is 2nd to none. Reminds me of a young Xabi Alonso. 2-1 win for us tonight I predict.

Fair to say Xhaka, Elneny and Mustafi signings are steps in the right direction in terms of being competitive again. Lucas may need a bit of time to be fair to him. Hopefully we can really drive on this season and break the glass ceiling. These lame performances such as Saturdays are still rearing their ugly head though just when you think we've turned a corner

Yeah its a competition we have no hope of winning, but if you cant get excited about a game like PSG you have to ask yourself why you follow football in the first place.

Even after so many years of painful defeats, I still get a buzz when I hear that CL anthem before a game. It's the hope that kills you.

Pretty hard to get the cohesian you need in the team when most of the squad is away on international break for the guts of 8-10 days. Better to judge our pwrformance tonight or on Saturday.

Hopefully one of them is showing it and not the celtic game

We have a very good chance of winning it imo. Our first XI is one of the best in Europe. The key is if we can keep most of our players fit throughout the season. You can already see the difference Santi makes to the side. Things could of being different last season if he wasnt injured. One of our most important players.

We just dont have the mentality to win a competition like this. We **** ourselves every year.

Does Wenger or any of us even know our strongest team as yet?

We can't play Cazorla three times in just over a week and is the defensive side of his game up to that level of football anyway? I doubt it.
Is Coq a nailed-on starter now? I didn't like the way he and Cazorla started last week against Southampton as they ran through the middle at us three or four times early on.
I would like to see Xhaka and Elneny start against PSG personally but will Wenger see it that way? Will Wenger go looking for a point or will he go for all three?

It's a good problem to have but we have to find our strongest midfield soon.
I think Coq and Santi would be grand in most home games against the likes of Burnley. Ramsey will also be back soon to give even more variety without weakening the team so you could even have Elneny and Ramsey or Xhaka and Ramsey which allows us rest players.
To be honest i'm still more worried by our defence. Our CB's have to gel very soon and our fullbacks have to learn when to attack or stay back and how not to give away stupid frees through rash challenges.

I think we have a very good squad who will improve as the season goes on but Wenger must be able to set them up differently for different styles of opposition.

I don't think we've a chance of winning the whole tournament I'm still excited about tonight all the same. I love getting to see us play against different teams and seeing how we deal with different styles of football. I reckon the boys will do the business tonight, 2-0 to the Arsenal.

TV3 are showing Barca v Celtic. Just as well because I can't get TV3 in HD anyway. Both picture and coverage are terrible!

It'll be on BT in HD.

Not really a fan of the group stages tbh, they're like glorified friendlies.

I love the group stages, it's where Arsenal generally play the majority of their European games too!

We're set up for rotation except for the wingers.

One good option there isn't enough.

Not specialist wingers, but we have Walcott and Lucas (and I guess Sanchez) who can play on the wing or up top.

We also have multiple players who can play on the wing or more centrally such as Ramsey, Ox, Iwobi.

I don't like our "cup keeper" philosophy, play your best players.

Hopefully Ospina has a quiet enough game.

    Bullsh1t team to me.
Xhaka should be on and so should Giroud.

Ox not at the races for a long time.

Maybe Wenger has the EPL as his main target for this season?

I suppose he planning to sit deep and use the pace of Iwobi Sanchez and Ox. A game made for Xhaka one would have thought. I really hope Ospina doesn't let him down again.

No theo in the squad? Is he injured?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

I'd say Ox and Iwobi are in there to put a defensive shift in in front of the full-backs. I expect PSG to monopolise the ball and we'll be looking to create something between Ozil & Sanchez on the break.
