Virginia Thrasher got a higher score in the 10m air rifle in Rio than the winner of the corresponding male event.

I checked the other shooting events in Rio and unless I made a mistake, the scores in the male events were better than the scores in the corresponding female events. Some were very very close though.

Wonder if we have any shooters on here to explain why there is a division in gun shooting. Off the top of my head I don't know. It could be that there it is just historical (in which case it should be changed imo) but would prefer to get some info from someone in the sport as I know nothing about shooting with guns. Certainly I think that any sport that can combine the genders should.

In korfball, a team consists of four male and four female players.

That isn't the same thing. If the gender distribution of a team is enforced then it isn't really the women competing against the men.

Realistically nothing. But they shouldn't have to compete with men. They shouldn't be ashamed of being inferior to a man and vice versa.

Women's track is shorter in distance.

I doubt it. If women can compete on an equal footing, then why are there no women in the top echelons of the men's darts game already? As with most sports, the money is better in the men's game, surely they'd go where the money is.

It again comes down to men on average having greater hand eye coordination and spacial awareness skills than women. They have greater potential to become good at sports like darts and snooker.

That's not to say women can't be very good darts players it's just that men have an unfair natural advantage.

    Ultra-marathons and long-distance swimming.

Women are far better at metabolising bodyfat for energy which gives them an advantage over men in endurance events.

People mentioning racing, shooting etc....men have faster reaction times and can also gauge distance better.

But the main problem with regards competitveness would be cultural(same as the "race" argument). Men simply participate in sport far more than women do.

But still at Rio in endurance events like the open water 10km swim and triathlon their times were slower than the men's.

Ultra-marathons there's been the odd example of women competing and even odder, winning.

Personally it doesn't bother me that women can't compete with men in sports. I don't really understand why it would bother other people. Sometimes you just have to know your natural physical/mental limitations and make your peace with that...

If you were raised on the notion that men and women are the same... and you believed that spiel... I guess it must hurt your brain to see reality not matching up with the propaganda!

When men are better at something than women, it's seen as an "unfair advantage"... when women are good at something it's never seen in the same way! ;)

I'm not sure numbers has that much to do with it. Like even if 1% of all sportspeople were women, at some point in history some woman would have risen to the ranks of the top men. It'd be a statistical impossibility for it not to happen. But it has never happened.

Sure it's not more that there's probably about 50 male competitive darts players for every female one?
Bit hard to become any good when the standard of opposition is so low. Bit pointless to merge genders when all it would serve to do is remove whatever value it has to the women who take part (I assume there's so little money in it that it's largely social).

Man? Who say he? Man! Man cherish the spoils of his creation. The woman is of no known origin within his game. His game. Floundering fluster of clustered ideas.

I think we're talking even longer than 10k.

''It is a fact that women are better than men in marathon swimming, on average. While the best men are still faster than the fastest women (with world-class men about 7 minutes faster than world-class women over a 10 km distance), the average woman is better in open water over the average man when the distance is at least 10 km.'' - (From this week's guest publication):)

That is quite interesting. Clearly we need some incredibly long races at the Olympics. However one small point I would make is that in distances over 10k for swimming I am pretty sure the average man and the average woman would be equal. They would both drown and never finish.😮

really:confused: is that scientific fact? or something you made up during your lunch break?

Yes men in general score better on hand eye coordination and spacial awareness tests. It's thought that this is a hold over from the hunter-gatherer period.

Research it if you wish, I assumed it was common knowledge.

I think people underestimate the need for strength in synchronised swimming and diving. No Olympic mens synchronised swimming either, sexist pigs.

Yeah I was raging over that too :)
