Is there much difference economy wise between the 2.0 and 1.6 litre 2009/10 golfs? I have a 1.4 petrol golf and don't want to be spending as much on diesel as I am on petrol as the moment. I drive around 500 kms a week. Asked a mechanic and he said there wouldn't be much difference between them if I got a 2 litre in the €200 a year tax bracket instead of €270.

Both will be far more economical than your current car.
There are different versions of the 2.0 engine with different gearboxes, power outputs etc, but they're all economical

Fuel economy on the 2.0 litre engine will not be any worse than the 1.6 litre. Don't let something like €70 difference in motor tax be the main influence in your decision.

I drove a 2012 1.6 tdi and 2.0 tdi golf (mk 6 I think) for work and economy was pretty much the same. The 1.6 tdi felt under powered compared to the 2.0 and you are always giving it more welly which leads to a lower consumption.
