Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was thinking along the lines of an old style passat but said id see if anybody has any other reccomendations.

    Thank you ☺

Before you discount bigger than 1.9 due to insurance, get a quote on this..

Miles better than a shïtbox octavia/passat of the same era..

Got a nice 04 Octavia here as a run around that's going for sale soon. Solid, decent condition, nice spec, just machine polished. Won't have it for sale until I NCT it though.

These have the 100bhp tdi pd engine either axr or atd so very old school for a 2009 and easy to work on along with being reliable.
The mileage on this one checks out on the mot reg checker but it may have been a taxi.
Cheap tax in Ireland and well up in the years (this is what affects insurance the most not engine size)
Not an exciting car by any means but for a reliable work horse it'd be hard bet

    Cheap - Reliable - Diesel

You can only pick two from the three above.

    Wrong

Saab 93 is so underpriced imo

Have mine for about 16months now and I love every long distance drive in it

Those early diesel accords give their own fair share of issues. Something like a 2005/6 skoda superb can be got for the ops budget and are a decent enough car despite having a chassis dating back to 1997.

    Hi guys OP here.

Have an update, viewed a 2006 2.0 TDCI mondeo (90 bhp) yesterday. Car was in good condition with a decent chunk of test and decent millage for its age. Has a new clutch and flywheel as well. Just wondering is there any common problems on these I should look out for?

    Thanks guys

I had a 2004 tdci mondeo a few years ago that suffered terrible injector trouble . Very expensive to fix. Think I spent about 1400 getting the fuel pump and 4 injectors changed.

At this end of the market I'd be more inclined to go for a petrol engined car.. I've a 2005 avensis now.. get 36 to 40 mpg and don't have any big bills outside tyres and general servicing.

Gearboxes are soft on some versions, not sure whether it is the 5 or 6 speed.

Ya they were sold up to 2009.
The gen2 shape had 105bhp tdi engines some of these were good (bkc) some bad (bxe)
The old shape gen1 Octavia like the one I posted has the older 100bhp tdi axr or atd pd tdi engines generally reliable but most importantly easy fix in comparison to other modern diesels.
Some vw 5 speed boxes can be soft but these were generally in mk5 golfs and other vag cars of that era but you'll know the minute ya drive one if the gearbox is dodge as the selectors will be sloppy and the changes notchy.
The beauty of the gen1 Octavia is it shares it's mechanicals with mkiv golfs, boras, toledos and Leon's so parts are cheap and readily available.
Couldn't comment on vrt as they're a law unto themselves but I can't imagine them being too dear to vrt
