I need to change the cambelt and tensioner ( inc waterpump) on this car. The tensioner is tighened by rotating the unit around the retaining bolt until the proper tension is achieved and then this bolt is tightened. According to the HaynesManual you need a special tool to know when proper tension is achieved. For 2008 cars onwards a newer tensioner is fitted which does not need any special tools to tighten correctly. Is there a way of knowing when the correct tension without getting the tensioner tool?

Is there not a spring in the tensioner on these? I know the 2004 16V tensioner had a spring and indicator, so you adjusted the tension till the indicator pointed between 2 marks.

DublinDilbert......I know that one you are talking about....the one in my car is a basic bearing but the hole for the retaining bolt is off centre and by rotating the bearing one direction makes it possible to increase tension on the belt and rotating the other way reduces tension as when you want to remove the belt....there is also a square hole in the bearing to allow a tool be used to swing the bearing around

I purchased the parts today and the tensioner is the one with the pointer and the marks...this means it can be tensioned with reference to the pointer marks....no need for a tensioning tool
