Kinda depends on what type of horror you like.

For me, character driven long novels I'd go with King.

    More in depth atmospheric, Straub.

Sex, violence and horror (supernatural or otherwise) and shorter books, Richard Laymon, Shaun Hutson.

Probably my favourite of all those traits combined in one book or another, James Herbert. Out and out horror, the Rats (and lots more). Supernatural tinge, The Shrine (ditto). In latter days the secret of Crickley hall. (Made into a TV show) And he had everything in between.

Classics, Poe, Lovecraft and of course Shelley and Stoker. Stevensons jeckyll and Hyde.

Quite like Cliver Barker myself. But not everything he does. Books of Blood and Weaveworld were great.

Not a horror writer per se but Henry James's The Turn of the Screw is a classic.
