Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Something for a VW expert

    Quick question lads,

    The swirl flaps on the Passat BMR engine have failed and I've been given the part number of the piece that failed.

    Failed part = 03G129711AF
    Part I've found to replace it: 03L129711AG

    I'm not able to determine if the AG part can be used to substitute the AF part.
    Any VW expert able to confirm if they are the same part?

    The change of the last letter means it's a revised part, the first 3 digits 03G mean it's for a passat, the middle section is the part number and the last bit is the revision number.

    So using that formula would it be plausible that the AG part will fit instead of the AF part?

    It's the same part the AG bit means it's a revised part i.e better, it's very common.

    Hold on.. First one is 03G second one is 03L I'm not sure what car 03L is but it 'may' fit. Sorry i should skim read less. :(

    Found the substitute - 03G129711AS
    The AF denoted that mine is a plastic manifold (seriously VW??) and if it ends G then it's the alloy compound version.
    Just waiting on pics of the swirl flaps before ordering.

    Better for who??

    It might mean it's been produced cheaper, it could mean that it was deemed over engineered and a 'less good' alternative could do the job?

    Better for VW!

    You might be right.

    In a previous life I was a VW parts man. I'm not familiar with current day part numbers but the breakdown is the same.

    The original part - 03G 129 711 AF. The 03G refers to the engine type and not the vehicle model. 129 means it's something to do with the air intake system. The 711 is the part identifier number and the AF is a variant of that part.

    The replacement part with 03L appears to be from a different engine type and while it may do the job, it is NOT the correct part. Something will be different - unless someone in VW can confirm that the 03G 129 711 AF has been superceded with 03L 129 711 AG (or another part). Personally, I wouldn't buy it without confirmation of supercession.

    Any VW dealer should be able to provide the information you require.
