I was interested in a young radio station being close to profitability so early in its life cycle. Looking at the filed accounts Dublin Rock Radio Limited made a loss of €660K for year ending 31-10-08 bringing total accumulated losses to approx €1.6m. For the following year Phantom made losses of approx €780k, bringing total losses to approx €2.4m.

It's possible the CEO or FC said they were close to breaking even for a particular month in 2008, but it's hard to see how Phantom were within a whisker of breaking even in 2008.

As you said, in trading terms, Phantom in early 2008 actually had months where income exceeded expenditure - despite the ridiculously high cost base! However, once revenue fell over the cliff it really bombed. We went from covering 60-100% of monthly costs in early 2008 to covering maybe 25% later in the year and credit control became a serious issue.

Business model for Phantom back then was nuts, but needed to be to get it past the BAI and of course, the mid-2000's (when the application was made) was generally nuts. By the time the crash came we were screwed to the wall and we made adjustments to the output as much as the model and once you're in that situation, it all gets a bit scary.

Anyway, apologies for taking this one off topic, I'll be good from now on. Sorry mods!

    Simon

So it's nigh on impossible to have a 'decent music' radio station under current BAI rules. I.e. if it doesn't appeal to the masses then you don't have the listenership and in turn don't have the revenue to survive. I presume that's why you didn't go after the TXFM licence Simon?

Any hope of the BAI revising / relaxing their requirements for alt stations? If not what's the plan with 8Radio, i.e. if it can never be commercially viable what's the long term hope with the current temp licence?

EDIT: posted this question in the 8Radio thread as more suited to there.

The argument seems to be that if Nova played more varied or obscure tracks by well-known artists, then this would be a good thing. Fair enough.

However, it is simply NOT what your average radio listener wants. They want to turn on the radio, hear something they know and like, sing along to it in the car or kitchen, and get on with their day. If you're listening from 7 am to 7 pm, you're going to get well-known music because commercial operators have to try to cater to their audiences and that's what the audience wants. Later in the evenings, you'll get more specialised stuff because hardly anyone is listening.

There's a weird misunderstanding on this thread of what Nova is or is trying to be. It is not an alt-rock or indie station, it is not a metal or a grunge station. It most definitely is not a replacement for TXFM. It is a classic rock station. That is what they play.

Edit: the other misunderstanding is that they should, for some reason, not play recent music, that anything pre-2000 should not be on Nova. Not sure where that's coming from either.

" It is a classic rock station. That is what they play"

On paper that's what it is, but how is Mgmt kids or bastille classic rock. I've no problem playing newer stuff but at least keep it rock orientated.

If I'm not mistaken Nova's MO is 'feel good guitar music' or something like that as opposed to Classic Rock.

Those bands are at the poppier end of the spectrum alright but still basically vocals, guitar, keyboard and drums. Whether you consider them rock or pop is probably down to whether or not you like them, but it's not like they're playing David Guetta and Little Mix.

This was the announcement from the BCI in 2008:
"The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today (March 28th) placed an advertisement in the national press, seeking applications to operate a classic rock service......."

" ....The service, which will be on the FM band, will be primarily music driven with a strong emphasis on classic rock music. The franchise area to be served is Dublin City and County and the commuter belt."

This was on the Radio Nova website from 2008:
A group comprising experienced radio investors has submitted an application to the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland to operate a ‘classic rock’ music radio station, aimed at Dublin city, county and the ‘commuter belt’ around the capital. Radio Nova 100 intends to provide a ‘first-rate and distinctive’ station, playing classic rock music from the 1960s to the present day, featuring some of the greatest rock artists of all time – as well as news, sport and local information.

    Article from Allaccess.com:
RADIO NOVA 100, a consortium of Irish business interests backed by VIENNA INVESTMENTS, has won the license for a new Classic Rock station serving DUBLIN, IRELAND.

This all says that the BCI were looking for applications for a Classic Rock License, Radio Nova applied for same and said they were.

I stand corrected. What's the cut off point for classic though I wonder, or is there one?

In terms of 60s/70s/80s like? No, there is no cutoff. You could release a classic rock song tomorrow.

Yeah, it's a genre now. The Answer would be considered classic rock. Not a hope of them being played on Nova anytime soon, though!

    Ouch..guilty and guilty....:p

You could be right...but Nova is definately NOT catering to this group...i actually cant decide who they are aiming their music at...probably people who like Lizzy but also have a Coldplay album and possibly a couple of Wolf tones too....Theyre the ones that stand around at gigs talking and taking "selfies".."..this is us at Metallica.....and this is us at Beyonce.....

this says you're wrong on both counts..........classic song about a classic motorbike and....... :)

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

LEGENDARY BROADCASTER COLM HAYES RETURNS TO RADIO

It’s been a while (well not that long)! Colm Hayes finished on RTÉ 2FM at the end of July and since then the Dublin broadcaster has been missing on radio. He's has been working on numerous projects and has just completed his first novel, a crime fiction thriller.

Now, Colm is set to return to radio, where he will guest present ‘John Clarke’s Biggest Jukebox’ on Radio NOVA for the next 3 Sundays.

One phone call from Dublin’s seriously addictive music station Radio Nova and Colm was dusting down his headphones, he says.

"It was going to take something special for me to return to radio and Nova is that something special", says Colm. "I’m a big fan of the station. The music they play is a cut above anything on any other radio station. John Clarke has given me the codes to his jukebox and the keys to his '65 Chevy so enjoy the ride Dublin”.

Kevin Branigan, Radio Nova’s CEO is delighted that Colm accepted his offer “I’ve long been an admirer of Colm’s presenting style, sense of humour – and, in particular, his audience numbers over the years! We’re delighted that Colm’s coming in to us and we’re looking forward to his return to the Dublin airwaves on Nova!”.

Colm has promised to keep up the great music that’s standard fare for Nova and was spotted earlier today loading up the Jukebox with The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, David Bowie and The Beatles to name but a few. Colm can be heard on Radio Nova 100.3 from 10am-2pm every Sunday until 1st January, with ‘The Biggest Jukebox’, four hours of great rock and roll classics.

Radio NOVA broadcasts to Dublin, Kildare, Meath & Wicklow on 100.3FM and is available nationally via the Irish Radio Player and the NOVA Smartphone app.

I was saying for a while that Colm Hayes would be a good fit for Radio Nova and look what happens! Seriously though, look at all the presenters involved with Nova who came from the superpirates of the '80s: Colm Hayes, John Clarke, Mike Maloney, Greg Gaughran, Pat Courtenay and filler presenter Ernie Gallagher.

Surely the purpose of John Clarkes show is that it doesn't play the usual Nova playlist? If Colm just puts the Beatles and Lizzy on rotation it will be just more of the same.

I noticed that Lisa Gernon is on again this evening. This must be her third week.

Has Jack Hyland been moved out of that slot again....or: Has he been let go, just like the previous occupant of that slot - Sinead Ni Mhordha?

If Jack has been let go and replaced by someone new to the station (Lisa), I don't understand what is going on.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me on all of this.

I posted the above back in the middle of October and lo and behold I heard Jack Hyland tonight standing in for Lisa Gernon! I was sure he was gone from Nova. I wonder does Moss Breathnach (his real name) do stuff behind the scenes then - that's the name he uses for his off-mike stuff. Anyway, it's great to hear Jack Hyland on the air again whatever is happening.

Is anyone else sick of this 'Secret Santa' character yet? His constant innuendo laden references to his 'sack' weren't funny last year and they aren't funny this year. Also, why does 'Santa' talk like a low level drug dealer who you might encounter at a deserted Luas stop?

I'm not sure, to be honest, Guile. It could very well be. However, it does appear to be the same guy as last year's 'Secret Santa' and I don't think Lalor was involved with Nova at that point.

not really. It's a new product and if anything, will generate interest in this new route to LAX from Dublin.

I do enjoy Saturday Nights with Alice Cooper. He plays good tunes and the show is ever so tongue in cheek and doesn't take itself too seriously. I agree that it's a far superior show in comparison to most of Nova's regular output. However, as it's a syndicated show broadcast internationally, they wouldn't be held to the same rigid music policy that Nova's own presenters must adhere to (with the exception of Pat James).

Has the app been working for anyone? From Mon evening it was only looping a bit of Alanis Morissette You Learn for about 12 hours. Now it doesn't even do that. I've tried it on two phones - one newest update and one really old. However, it works fine on TuneIn.
