As long as they are not trying to suggest they do have exclusive rights I would have no problem.
Bruce Springsteen is joining Radio Nova! The superstar will present a new weekly 90-minute show called “From His Home to Yours” every Thursday evening at 7pm beginning August 20th (repeated Sunday mornings at 9am).

In the new show, ‘The Boss’ will play records from his own personal collection and share his thoughts and stories, direct from his home in New Jersey exclusively on Radio Nova in Ireland.
“I am one of Bruce’s biggest fans. I’ve seen him so many times live and now I’m going to share a microphone with him. This is a career highlight no doubt!” said Colm Hayes,
Radio Nova Programme Director and Breakfast Show Presenter.
career highlight?! sure he can stick on an Elvis or Beatles track and claim the same about "sharing a microphone"!

I think the word "boss" was an almost dead giveaway.

Yeah, I was sure it was the Springsteen thing, I'm more talking about them deliberately misleading people into thinking he is going to be in the actual studio, sharing mics etc.

They know exactly what they are at and have left enough leeway to say "oh we never meant to imply that", yes you fcuking did!
direct from his home in New Jersey exclusively on Radio Nova in Ireland.
should be "direct from his home in New Jersey, broadcast on stations around the world, exclusively in Ireland on Radio Nova."

But the sharing the mic bit takes the biscuit, career highlight, they stick on Springsteen recordings daily!

To be fair the did try pull the exclusive card with other famous presenters in the past too, with Alice Cooper and Rick Wakeman if I recall correctly.
Same set up, they recorded a show and sold it to stations worldwide.

How do Nova pay the bill for this if they're already struggling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,513 ✭✭✭KildareP

I can't see it working or lasting long.

98FM tried similar with Ryan Seacrest and it was quietly dropped. They had Seacrest "localise" the links so it sounded like he was presenting exclusively for 98FM (which led to much pisstaking by Ray Foley, joined later on by Adrian and Jeremy when they started with 98FM :P)

Seems very common in the USA where networking and syndication is practically a given for most stations and you have hundreds of "HD radio" sub-streams and the likes of SiriusXM. When you try and bring it to a station here it just sounds "American". Even back in the day Atlantic 252 didn't stick with the faux-American sound for too long!

If memory serves me right, Rick Wakeman did mention Nova quite a bit. I think he may have had a specific arrangement with Nova - could be wrong about that of course.

Kinda the same with Alice Coopers show on Planet Rock on Mondays. The rest of the week seems just like the syndicated show but Monday feels a bit more personal to PR.

So, let's see who is still on Radio Nova from the original list of presenters: Marty Miller, Pat Courtenay and Greg Gaughren.

Presumably, Pat James (from the original lineup on Radio Nova) is still on their digital station Classic Rock with Off the Record on Saturday nights - it's a while since I have listened to it much, and certainly not since he was moved from Sundays to Saturdays. (He was moved from Radio Nova to Classic Rock a few years ago, initially staying on Sundays as before.)

And before someone says it: Dee Woods was not part of the original lineup of presenters! She was involved with news initially, though.

Hi Pat, thanks for replying directly. I used to dip in and out of your show but it became a rarer event when it was moved to Classic Rock. By the time it moved to Saturdays, I had fallen out of the habit. I can understand your decision.

Note to myself: must start listening again! I could have you plugged into my ear via my smartphone while I am doing something else!

You have some cv at this stage!

Too kind! Sure... I've been around a bit (I guess!) but I'm happy at this point to say I've spent the last 5 years in just the one station..- as head of production/station sound and a fill-in presenter.

Who is on at lunch time? Is it Dee?

Nova is on in the kitchen, I'm working from home so hear it when making my lunch. It seems the list of songs they're allowed to play is very small. The Kinks - Come Dancing seems to be on every day aroud the same time. Bruce Springsteen with Cover Me too.

So where are some of the former presenters of Radio Nova now? I deliberately left out some that I'm not sure - (a) if they are gone completely, or (b) what exactly they are doing now.... or (c) syndicated job!

Enda Murphy - Sunshine 106.8 and Classic Hits

    Carol Dooley - Sunshine 106.8

Mike Maloney - online station Music One Ireland

John Power - presenter (as John Power) and owner (Noel Dicker) of Greystones-based digital station GCR Digital Radio

Breffni Clack - freelance multi-platform journalist and content creator

Hugh O'Brien - main job: solicitor. Often turns up on Christmas FM

Damien Farrelly - Classic Hits - was a filler breakfast presenter for about a week on Nova

P.J. Gallagher - Classic Hits - was a filler breakfast presenter for about a week on Nova

Paul Moriarity - Podcast producer and presenter for RTE (television and Radio One)

    Johnny Bowe - Q102

David Tighe - Managing Director of Bauer Media Northern Ireland (Cool FM/Downtown Radio/Downtown Country) - when he was CEO of Nova, he did some fill in as presenter a few times

Can you fill in a few more gaps?

So I see Ruth Scott is standing in for Pat while he’s off.. but she is also standing in for Elaine Crowley on TV3 right now ... hmmmmm. Anyone confirm she has a doppelgänger?! Or is the Nova afternoon show pre recorded?

Used to hear her recording her shows on the Classic Rock stream.....for some reason it used to bleed through the music and occasionally the music would disappear completely and you'd hear the full recording. Quite a few of them would do it and some were really mad.....the language from the morning muppets was def not live radio standard, hearing Colon and Loopy effing and blinding was funny.

oops - yeah, lots of shows are recorded

Listened to it last Thursday night his speech as you rightly point out was ruined by gasps for air every 3/4 words never mind a complete sentence.

The music choices were fine except for his New Jersey Buddy Jon Bon Jovi but really irked me was the contents of the links I felt it was condescending he kept going on about Lockdown and how it was effecting him and what he was doing and trying to put into perspective with the common person which was an american audience primarily in this case, so maybe thats why it was just not making any connection to me with the audience.

Songs, jingles, ads, promos etc and overall technical presentation is very all over the place.
    Short links, no callers.

Good to have Pat back though !!

No introduction or explanation from Ruth when she did take over.
It was like she was presenting the entire show from the start.

At times you could hear Pat on the phone to someone, trying to fix the issues.
There was white noise to be heard at times and music / sound effects beds with no Pat talking over them.

Maybe he is over in New Zealand?

Had to laugh that they were promoting the release of Metallica's S&M2 album last week. I believe they even had an interview with Robert Trujillo last Friday. I love Metallica and I'm glad they were doing it but when was the last time they actually played a Metallica song? When they played Slane last year, the only mention on Nova that I heard was on Pat's show and he played Sandman. In fairness its probably the only Metallica song anyone there has heard of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,645 ✭✭✭prunudo

And there lies the hypocrisy of Nova, they let on the are a rock station with their Facebook page, promotions and gig guide but their playlist doesn't reflect this. They've aimed their station at people who sing along to 'don't stop believing' and 'living on a prayer' at weddings who now think they're into rock music.

Edit, and don't get me wrong, I understand why they do it, ad revenue, there simply isn't enough rock fans to make a station viable but in doing so they've lost their identity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,037 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

When I was growing up there was a rock station (called The Rock :D) that used to have Mandatory Metallica every week night at 8:45pm. They would play 3 Metallica songs back to back. When I was a student and working part time in a leisure centre, we used to crank that **** up before closing at 9pm. Loved that station. Still listen to them every now and then online. A proper rock music radio station.

You talking about the old pre Nova "Rock" or the new one ....don't think Branigan has anything to do with the new one....won't be fcuked up so...:P

I believe Courtenay had to take in a delivery of hair dye...going to take a while i' expect...:D

Greg Gaughren comes with a lot of radio experience. He was with a number of Dublin pirate stations during most of the 1980s. I believe at one stage he presented a rock show on 1980s pirate Kiss FM. His legal radio experience includes: 98FM, Century Radio, Rock104/FM104, Dublin's Country Mix 106.8 (now called Sunshine 106.8) and East Coast FM.
