Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Car won't start. Is it the battery?

Car won't start. The battery reads good on one of the Aldi battery checkers until it is turned then the lights on the checker go off. It will start with a jump from another car.

I am currently charging an old battery to see if it will jump it. i want to find if it is the battery before calling a mechanic because if it is I can get a jump from my friend and drive to the shop and get them to fit a new battery. But don't want to buy a new battery if it is something else

So if it was the starter motor or anything else would it start from another car jump? It clicks and the speedo and fuel dial hand turn all the way clockwise and go back

If it starts with a jump from another car, it's not the starter - Most definatly the battery.

Battery takes only a few min to slot in and test its functioning, so mechanic will hardly charge you if for some very unusual reason it's not the battery

Thanks for the reply.Would a battery die just suddenly ?There was no warning light nothing unusual all lights working etc

Didn't really look at link but yes a battery can die suddenly.

I'm almost certain your Battery is dead/defective, but what caused it is an entirely different question.

Hopefully you will be lucky and it will just be end of life, but it could be caused by other issues like premature battery drain, faulty alternator etc...

Get a new one hooked up to your leads and check. Mechanic shouldn't even charge you to just test its that easy

Also ask him to test is alternator charging with new batt in. Again a simple test

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be the brushes in the alternator. They were so worn that the battery was not charging and kept running out. What model car is it?

I had a similar issue. Battery wasn't dead, but the float charge disappeared. Ran a multi Meyer and it was sitting as 12v, and had a healthy battery and it ran at 13.2v (I think).
