Got the invoice tonight, it reads as follows -

    (ex vat)
    Labour - 130
    Wiper blade 45 MM Qty - 1 - 16.86
    Wiper blade SX Qty - 1 - 10.93
    Oil Filter - 10.93
    Sump Washer - 1.80
    F/Synth Oil - 5 ltrs - 39.50
    Sundries - 10

    Total (inc vat) 245.04

130 + VAT = €147.55 for just changing oil and filter and fitting new wiper blades (and even taking wheels off and on) seems extremally overpriced to me.

It's a job which takes me about 45 minute on my driveway, without any professional equipment and me not being qualified mechanic. (taking wheels off and on would be another 15 minutes).
In fully equipped garage, done by qualified mechanic, shouldn't take more than 20 - 30 minutes.

    BTW
It doesn't seem to add up to me....
245.04 including VAT (and 220.02 ex vat as you listed) would mean VAT rate of 11.37% vat rate which can't be the case.
Either there's an maths error, or some of this has 0% vat rate which I think is unlikely.

Yep, if a garage can do a basic service for €129 including the parts and the vat, paying 23% more than that for labour alone is taking the mick, especially on a dying brand like Suzuki.

It's not like the dealership is making a living off of Suzuki sales anyway.

Going to Toyota dealership next Monday. 125 eur or a reduction if I bring my own stuff. Going to see what the reduction is. Happy to service myself, but its got a FTSH atm, so for a pittance might as well keep it. :)

edit: will change spark plugs, air filter, brake pads etc myself.

Service VAT is 13.5% so he's close with those figures, but not exact.

    85.89 for parts, 130 for labour - 215.89 @ 13.5% vat (29.15) = 245.04
I put 10.93 down for oil filter & one of the wiper items. Wiper item should have been 6.80. Apologies for the confusion.

    This is what annoys me.

People don't seem to realize that having a "fully equipped garage" , and a "qualified mechanic" costs an awful lot more than doing the work in your front driveway.

His point isn't the price per hour it's the number of hours
If he takes 45min with a driveway then the garage should take the same or less
130 an hour ex vat is high for a Suzuki garage that should have taken .6 or .7 of an hour
100 inc vat would be fairer it's not like they aren't among money on the parts as well

And that it takes 20 minutes to get a set of keys, clock on, find the car, get it on a lift and remove the belly pan. Not to mention writing up the health check, filling out the service book, reseting service light, stickering, filling out the job card afterwards etc.

Sure, unscrewing the sump plug only takes 15-20 seconds, but doing "the job" takes a lot longer.

Still doesn't really justify €130 in this scenario imo however.

To be honest Allinall, I don't really care how much it costs to have fully equipped garage or qualified mechanic.

All I know is I'm never going to fork out €150 for labour on changing my oil and wipers.
Why would I, if I can get different garage to do it for half of that or even quarter of that, or I can do it on my own within less than an hour.

We live in free economy world, and surely if garage can make business by changing oil for €150 then fair play to them. But surely it's quite all right for us here on the forum, to openly talk about the fact, that it's way too much, and no one should be really paying that.
Once people stop paying that much for oil change, that garage will either lower the prices to more competetive levels or go out of business.

    Kind of, but no.

People seem to hate 'main Steelers' as they call them on boards for various reason and not all of them for the wrong reasons....they provide a lot of employment, generate revenue, sponsor teams, take out full page ads in the papers regularly etc, your local 'indy' or marque specialist probally trained in a dealership at some stage, and like it or not the car you are driving was more than likely was purchased new in a dealership.....I think people should direct more of their resentment to company's like Volkswagen who's products a lot of you love, they make the dealers jump through hoops to have the showroom, even tell you your staffing levels, and the equipment you have to have whither you need it or not, so dealers have to change more...

Lets not let those facts get in the way of a good main dealer bashing.

we use mobil oil in our garage and booklet would say to use mobil esp fully synthetic which is expensive at e15 a litre + vat.
there are cheaper oils out there but will stick with a well known brand, always check handbook for type of oil to be used.
sundries at e10 is cheap and now garages have to pay to get rid of old sump oil and some may pass the recycling fee on to you or combine in labour costs?

I like how the oil is always 5 litres. I recall getting the S40 done on a 1st (and their last) service. My sump only holds less than 4 but charged for 5 (I found this out when doing it myself) ant wiper blades cost a whopping 42 Euro, still have them by the way.

Big concern in getting dealer garages doing the service done especially at VW garages is VW constantly change the parts and oils. Surely there is a high chance the oil is the wrong type and the filter cartridge not the correct one?

Did the Golf recently and the dealers were more than perplexed trying to find the parts. Even finding the timing "belt" service interval was a challenge.
