A serious gripe with the weekend - why the hell are parents leaving their kids off into a drunk / dosed up crowd to collect cups?
Totally irresponsible! There were Ket warriors all over the place who were on another planet and besides the dangers of the kids getting hurt or lost, not one of them did I see wearing gloves. Who knows what sh!t they were picking up from the ground

It just doesn't strike me as somewhere for kids - personally I'd rather do something else with them another weekend & keep picnic for me - besides the amount of money I'd end up burning through at the fairground, I just don't fancy wheeling them around mucky ground with ear protectors on, unable to have a few scoops & not able to just go to whatever tent I want....

That Caravanoke was nuts. Seriously thought it was going to tip over a few times. Great laugh in there

Defo one of the better picnic's ...dissapointed with a few of the bigger names but enjoyed the smaller stages in part the Salty Dog.

Nicer vibe and crowd than last year for sure.

The weather was strange freezing friday night ,wet and roasting Sat night and lovely last night even tho I didn't camp as I live locally.

Heard they caught a big gang from Dublin who were only there to rob stuff ..suppose to be a gang they were after for a few years..

    Highlights

*more foodstall and every sort of stalls in general
    *way better vibe this year
    *better organisation and management
    *Riptide movement ...
    *Beer in cute hoor stall(mmmm)
    *weather Sunday mild and perfect

    Lowlights
*London Grammar (just don't get them maybe its just me)
*Rain saturday evening(I was home before it got too bad)
*Q's for taxi's in Stradbally town for locals(usually get one handy most years)

    Over all great festival....

See ya next year folkes hope eveyone has a safe trip home.

To the two girls from Co.Down I gave a lift back into Portlaoise and dropped at the train station this morning who were thumbing ..You left your sleeping bag in my boot...full of dirty clothes as well thanks...:-) ...They are gone into the bin!!!

Wonder was the crowd I saw getting frogmarched out yesterday the gang u mention above.

They sure looked dodgy anyway from the admittedly brief glimpse I had of them as i wandered merrily to trench town

It was gas craic! Pain in my ribs from the laughing ( and maybe a stumble or three). Think festivals should really be like pubs where kids are gone by 9pm or something. Met one family at around 2am Sun morning pulling a trolley with a couple of kids in it. A few picnickers nearly fell on top of them. They should def give them gloves collecting the glasses. Met one 10 year old on sat eve who had made €175. Said he didn't know where his parents were but he'd see them at tent later!
Anyhow, loved Rag n Bone Man, The Divine Comedy, Frank n Walters, Madness and everything I saw in Jerry Fish and Trailer Park. Stephanie Rainey was excellent too.
Only disappointing thing this year for me was Cracked Pepper in PMC. ****e set up compared to last year. See ye in the new thread whenever it starts. FFS can someone pin the answers to the usually repetitive questions to the start! Best of luck recovering!

Thanks to whoever the whoever fed me half a bottle of Jameson somewhere in the woods! Mates said I was the best act of the weekend after it

Report from a couple of oldish picnicers (feel every day of 45 years today)...

    Friday
Booka Brass were a great start in OV
My Fellow Sponges - bit of fun
    RoadHouse Doors - ok
London Grammer - I quite liked them, other half wanted to go after 4/5 songs!
Tried to squeeze into Jenny Green but way too packed
Body and Soul stuff....including a trad session in a tiny installation near East gate
Cian Finn - in trenchtown - wow!

    Saturday

    Louisina 6 - fun
Bad Bones - a highlight for me
Giggs - was ok, talk about doing the bare minimum effort!
    The Pretenders
Madness - knew every word - great craic
These charming Men - great as usual
Tribe called quest - ok ish - left after 4-5 songs.
    Le Galaxie - pretty good
    Public Sector Broadcasting - wow
    Clark - omg
    Le Boom - omg!!

Thank f**k for good rain coats/trousers!

    Sunday
Gospel Choir to start things off - that first pint was hard!
Gangsters - Salty Dog, really good
David Keenan - B&S, was looking forward to this, sound not great - he was good though, friends seen him in Jerry fish Sat eve and were very impressed.
    Elbow - very good
Rubberbandits - caught most of them from outside, very good!
Duran Duran - meh, left after confetti stuff!
The Pale in Salty dog - brilliant
Wondered into Jack L in Hazelwood - OMG
Stumbled into tiny rave at art installation next to it!

Had a walk into Jerry fish whenever we passed by - seen bits of great acts.
Fully agree with the Saturday compere and previous comments, the noise bleed from Heinaken thing nearby, kills it a little.

Probably one or two more but a great variety of music over the few days.

Just our second picnic so cant do a whole lot of comparsion - seemed busier than last year, atmosphere not as mental, no where near the number of wrecked youngsters, food etc great.

Will probably go for early bird tickets again!!

After much moaning over the last few months, it looks like this years EP went down well. Had no tickets. Then secured tickets. Then had to offload tickets for personal reasons. I ended up doing chauffeur for the 3 days so it was nice to be in and around the buzz of Stradbally for the weekend. Had it all mapped out. Madness, The Divine Comedy, Elbow, The Pretenders, The Strypes and a bit of Chaka Khan. Then a big finish with Duran Duran.

I'm sensing that Duran Duran surprised a lot of people. They got a lot of stick here and on social media when they were announced as Sunday headliners. Never had any doubts myself about them bringing a lot to the Picnic and from the reaction/reviews, it appears they did.

    What a fantastic weekend!

Was going to start with the negatives...but why bother!

    Highlights
Cannot say there were many acts they left me disappointed..the start and end of Interpol was excellent, was a bit samey in the middle of the set.
For clashes, I tried to catch as much of an act as I could.
So got 10-20 minutes of Jagar Wa, Parquet Courts, Rusangano Family and Lemon Twigs..every minute of each were excellent!

ATQC were brilliant, even with the horrid conditions. RTJ too put on both a great show and very engaged with the crowd.
Aaron Lee Tasjan sang great, played brilliantly and was funny to boot! 30 minutes wasn't enough.
    But top acts were
Young Fathers...blistering, powerful and some amazing songs.
Phoenix - the rain nearly made me skip them for Interference but they were brilliant. Great songs, and Thomas Mars coming into the crowd was so cool.
Fr John Misty - my gig of the weekend. A showman with a voice and songs to back it up.. theatrical, sexual or however you can describe it, it was amazing.
    Til next year

Yep? Aaron Lee Tasjan was a hoot. That intro to "Bitch can't sing" was the funniest thing I heard all weekend.

For me it was a great weekend. Saturday night's weather was absolutely energy sapping, and I barely had enough to finish out Sunday, but I got there in the end.

    Highlights:
    - Aforementioned Soulwax gig
    - Wyvern Lingo in Other Voices and the general absolutely f*cking brilliant soul dripping out of so many Irish acts these days (BARQ, Shookrah, Katie Laffan) - it's wonderful.
    - Tribe Called Quest, stupid "live video feed" screens on the main stage aside (video director had no idea how to deal with a rap group with multiple possible rappers, apparently - and don't use a video feed that has a few milliseconds of delay on it, it makes everyone look like they're lip-syncing), this was great and makes me realise how much I will miss Tribe as a collective. RIP Phife and ATCQ!
    - The XX another headliner that people didn't feel could headline, but I thought they were pretty much perfect, and seemed really overwhelmed by the crowd's warmth for them.
    - Weather: with one glaring exception of the Saturday night, weather was excellent on Friday, most of Saturday daytime, and most of Sunday too.
    - Food, top notch stalls in the main arena as ever, always a highlight.
    - The tweaking of some stages in Body and Soul to combat the disgusting noise dribbling out of the ****box Logic 'stage' - putting that 'The Haunt' barn right behind it was a great choice as it blocked out the awful trance music, and had some great music of it's own, and it meant that the Bandstand being on the other side of the B&S area was much more audible. Great work Body and Soul (no doubt Festival Republic had absolutely feck all to do with this improvement, more on this later).
    - Those new gravel paths through the campsites. They held up to the rain very well.

    Lowlights:
    - Sad little idiots all weekend who loved to remark (too loudly, but obviously they meant it) that it was crazy bringing a kid to a festival (ours is a toddler but he was there last year too). Listen f*ckos, you might not realise it while you're filling your tent with pill farts, but there are hours and hours of the festival that happen before you drag your stupid glitter costumed arses away from the rubbish pile of ****e you've discarded around your tents and head into the arena for a wakeup snack at 7pm. Before then, the festival is its best self, empty of the self-involved, ignorant pricks who love to mash their jaws off later in the evening, and it's absolutely lovely for kids and families. Nobody wants to hear your worthless opinion, least of all the parents who have to trudge through the campsite you've turned into a landfill because Festival Republic refuse to sell more than 10 family campervan tickets.

    - The ever-expanding commercialisation of the festival. This is nothing new, but it feels like it has reached an absolute nadir this year, with Logic, Just Eat, and Bold Motel competing with each other for the loudest music from **** DJs (by contrast I thought Heineken and Bacardi had good DJs on). Festival Republic are laughing all the way to the bank, because they don't care about the fabric of the festival - look at how they treat Jerry Fish, one of their longest running tents, wedged in between all these big branded stages that are playing ****e music (Logic Stage had actual trance music ffs) far too loudly. The balance on what is commercialised and what isn't has tipped too far in the wrong direction, and without Trailer Park and Body and Soul, the main arena would be a disaster.
    - Most of the campsites. I can't tell whether the weather exacerbated this problem, but the campsites were absolutely disgusting. Can't believe how many young people seem to love wallowing in their own rubbish. Of course, I also noticed that the organisers didn't bother putting very many bins in the campsites, so even the people who did clean up had no recourse but to dump their bin bags at flagpoles.
    - Food stalls in the campsites. A stark contrast to the main arena, with crappy fried food all around (glory be to the big Smoothie stall near the UFO stage entrance though)
    - Stage timings. What was up with all the huge clashes this year? You don't schedule Kiasmos and Soulwax at the same time unless you've been hit on the head too many times.

Overall, had a great time, really enjoyed it, but I think this year might have been solidified as my last year, unless somehow I manage to grab one of the couple of Family Campervan tickets that Festival Republic reduce in size every year, I'm done. EP has lost it's soul for me.

Different security there this year. They seemed friendlier. Glad the brought the family camping route back. Last years was a disaster. A lot of people getting wrong change (in favour of the barman) last year at the bar. Any mention of that happening this year.?

Yes. I wonder were they the same crowd that used to do it when Aiken ran it?
The last few years the security were grunts.

"A lot of people getting wrong change (in favour of the barman) last year at the bar. Any mention of that happening this year"

Well it happened to me in the Heineken yokey ravey thingy. I nipped in from Jerry Fish to grab a beer. Got short changed a euro. I didn't bring it to the girls attention unfortunately but I did to most people behind me. I reckon last year I got fleeced but as far as I know this year it was only that one time. 1 Euro is very subtle. Easy to explain if caught

Worst part of the festival was the beer selection. Only Heineken, Tiger or Cute Hoor (all owned by the same company). It's a false economy though because craft beer w*nkers like me would only drink Heineken if we are already a bit tipsy from drinking delicious beers, and Heineken will still sell loads of their beer even if a few small breweries are there. Worse, I only found out on the last night that the bar in the Heineken tent serves a better pint (individually poured from tanks as opposed to the 10 pint filling machine yolk at the main bars).

Best part of the festival was everything else. Sorry about the long post, but here's what I thought:

    Friday
Arrived early and enjoyed the sun. Pity the main arena and body and soul weren't open during the day. Would've loved to have wandered around mindfield etc and got into the festival mood in the time between tent set up and the music. Saw Booka Brass Band in a wedged other voices before the Roadhouse Doors really kicked things off. Divine Comedy were a bit disappointing so popped into Young Fathers for a bit. DC did that annoying thing of playing their new(ish) stuff solidly for the first half an hour and then playing the hits for the second half. I don't understand why they can't mix in a few hits at the start and middle!

I went to London Grammar on spec and was really impressed, even if it was a bit out of sink with the "Friday of festival lets go mental" vibe felt elsewhere in the site. Caught the end of Vince Staples who was very good and had such a deadly vibe in the crowd. Saw the XX and thought they were good - again probably more of a Sunday evening act rather than a Friday night headliner - but my friends went to Bicep and said they were amazing.

Rounded off the night with HMLTD in Body and Soul who were class, notwithstanding several logistical problems with the mikes and sound engineer. They're a sort of mix of punk and glam rock if that makes any sense! For such a sunny day, Friday night was baltic in the tent, especially around 4am.

    Saturday
Saw Madness who were really good fun, played all the hits and brought a load of kids from the audience up to dance at the end which was a nice touch for the day time family crowd. Nearly had a heart attack during Baggy Trousers and One Step Beyond! Caught some of the Rusangano family who are always great live ("if you have something extra, you know what to do"). There's something about two guys going mental to a thumping beat while singing about diverse topics such as existentialism and tea that's impossible not to like. RTJ were fairly intense but sure they always are!

Didn't enjoy ATCQ as much as I thought I would - they relied a little too much on recorded Phife Dogg and overly formulaic crowd interactions. Still, they are legends and are probably not going to get another tour in so good to see them. Interpol were the highlight of saturday for me. Turn on the Bright Lights is a great album and I really like the format of bands playing the whole album on the 15/20th aniversary etc. When they finished with Evil the crowd erupted.

The rain was something else on Saturday evening, but weirdly it was a lot warmer in the tents than on Friday night. Maybe that was my beer jacket though.

    Sunday
This really was the best day of the festival for me. Sun was shining all the way through the Skatellites and it was a great way for everyone to bridge the gap between horrible hangover and a final night's decadence! King Kong Company were full on and it was a pity that they played so early (I knew in my heart of hearts that I would be barely standing at 2am for their salty dog gig). Rag N Bone Man was good too and he was perfect for the Sunday afternoon - mellow and entertaining.

Popped into the Pretenders and they were good entertainers but nothing really special. At least they were nothing compared to Chaka Khan who was just fantastic! Not only was she one of the few non-Irish acts to know that she was in Stradbally and not in Dublin, but she played a brilliant set and had the crowd eating out of her hand. She played loads of Rufus era stuff but mixed it with crowd pleasing cover of I'm every woman and of course I feel for you (with a nod to Melle Mel) and ain't nobody.

Duran Duran were brilliant and were a good reminder that a good front man can really make a gig brilliant. They closed off the main stage with a load of lights, confetti, dry ice and beach balls while Rio was pumped out! Really good to see them. I was a bit annoyed that the 10.30-12pm slot on Sunday night was so clashy with Soulwax (my friends who went said they were amazing) and Ash, but a nice little surprise was that Ash started late so I caught most of their gig after all!

In contrast to Friday night, Sunday was absolutely roasting in the campsite (really humid).

    Overall

This was a great festival. Don't know why people were complaining about the lineup, but then again the fact that so many of my choice of bands were on the main stage is a sign that I'm entering middle age middle class uncoolness.

I regret not really doing enough wandering aimlessly around the smaller areas, seeing random bands, political talks, bar areas etc. They looked like fun, but there was hardly enough time to get between gigs so only got to catch a few of the djish parts. Would also have liked to have done more late nights (the latest I stayed up was 2.30) but I suppose that's a sign of getting old and you can only ever really do the days or the nights, not both!

The place did seem to be fairly busy for most of the time. Never overcrowded, but not as relaxed as I would have liked. The large numbers of young people off their chops with no tops on didn't help much either.

There were about twice as many bands that I'd like to see playing that there was time to see them, and that's not counting the random gigs that you can wander into and turn out to be really good! It's annoying in some respects, but on the other hand it's a sign of how good the lineup was.

    If I ruled the world

If I could change one thing, I'd get a better variety of beers (can't comment on the spirits and wine selection, but it seemed to be largely prosecco and bacardi coctails). I realise this is probably due to sponsorship etc, but it would be a bit nicer if they could get a few more options in the main arena. Especially since you can't bring cans into the arena.

I would've liked to have gone down on the Thursday, but I'm glad I didn't because there didn't seem to be anything going on and not all campsites were accessible apparently. Maybe they could put some of the smaller acts and the Mindfield/yoga etc on on the Thursday next year - make a nice day to get into the festival mood.

Youd think even if Heineken wouldnt allow craft beers to be sold, they could at least expand the selection within their own range of owned breweries:

I personally enjoyed Vince Staples. Hip hop is the quintessential headphone music for me. It's very difficult to pull it off live as a solo performer. That's why the best hip hop live acts are groups, and it's why even some of the very best solo rappers choose to perform with some nondescript hype-man to vibe off. Vince Staples chose to go it alone with a very stripped back aesthetic and I think it worked.

I was a bit disappointed but I'm not really a fan of his new album either, I guess he's developing as an artist but at Glastonbury last year he was a lot more engaging with the crowd.

Your best bet is to head south on the M9 as if heading for Waterford/Kilkenny.

Swing off for Carlow which should get you onto the N80 and head towards Stradbally that that way. That takes you to the Yellow carpark.

Alternatively head south again on M9 and leave it when signed for Ballitore. This gets you onto the N78. Follow this to Athy and then join the N80 for Stradbally. I imagine this to be a bit cross country though so the first option is probably best.

    Hope this helps

Big thanks to you! Great directions, went via Athy, made such a big difference, going back to the car wasn't a trauma!

Absolutely stunning show by Soulwax last night, just amazing - personally the best electronic performance I've ever witnessed.

Incredible stage setup (the three drummers in the soundproof booths were ridiculously good, both in concept and their actual drumming), and they created a proper rock-rave crossover that they managed to perform fully live even with all the electronics. I used up every ounce of energy I had left for that one.

I was a bit gutted about the Kiasmos clash, but honestly, having seen Kiasmos before, I love 'em but their live show is like 99% of electronic artists. Soulwax brought a f*cking recording studio with them and were a pure headbanger ending to the festival. I had zero regrets for my choice.

    Yessss. This. This. This.

My mushed brain couldn't find the words. Absolutely incredible. Had no idea Igor Cavalera drummed for them live. Nice little bonus for me as a Sepultura fan.

Had an absolute great weekend overall. Met some lovely people and had real laugh. The rain did spoil Saturday night for me it was some contrast to Friday and Sunday. Spent most of the time pottering around without a care in the world. Some of the campsites were an absolute mess by Sunday evening not to mention the toilets. I stayed in Joplin which wasn't bad. Wrecked now from all the walking but I also have tomorrow off work to recover.

Gotta say I really enjoyed my picnic. Just myself and herself until we brought our 4 and 5 year old down.
First off ,Pablo, your app was as ever quality. You say it's not much hassle but it makes life easier for many of us. Thank you.

Friday we caught Myles Manley for all of 5 mins....not for us.
We went for the "history of hip hop" and I left very disappointed. Singers were very good but I think dj mo didn't use much imagination when compiling his track listing.
I'd been dying to see London grammar but thought the gig lacked atmosphere. She has a class voice but I felt underwhelmed.
Skipped across to ships who I thought were very good before going back to the tent for a bag of beer and vodka which herself put down while I went to the toilet. DISASTERr
Caught hmltd before catching the end of me freak and then 20 mins of otherkin who were brilliant.
Saturday brought a stroll to stradbally which we had to do but I hugely regret as I missed madness and everything x 2 by having that extra pint(I knew what I was doing)
Caught these charming men....quality. enjoyed by all ages. Wandered around taking in a bit of elaine mai Utah saints and the today fm stage before a few minutes of floating points but it was a bit heavy for my liking. Checked out annie mac for half an hour before la galaxie then perfume genius. Went back to me galaxie who I thought had a stomper before catching Pete tong who I thought was decent.
Sunday we collected the kids and came back for pretenders (brilliant )chaka Khan (enjoyable) and band of horses. Needed half hour kip before coming back so missed lemon twigs. Raging. Too tired to stay for more.

Good shout by festival republic putting stone in the walkways. Made life a bit easier. Overall I thought it was a great atmosphere . Between heineken, the hotel, logic and bacardi bar i never ventured into any. Feck that. No interest. Ridiculously loud sh te. Suppose I'll do it all again next year.

I second this - thanks again thebusher, your directions were excellent. We went via Athy too and got into the Yellow car park no problem shortly before 2 on Friday afternoon.

I'll post again soon with thoughts on my first full Picnic.
