Came upon a learner and "instructor" on the Drummartin Rd at Goatstown today....watched them as they approached the Edenpark rd junction...theres a dedicated left turn lane and a straight ahead...they were in the left lane, the rest of us (in cars and vans) move to the right lane for straight ahead....then almost at the lights the instructor decides he wanted to go straight on.....so now newbie has to negotiate squeezing into moving traffic, between a truck and van... which can be daunting even for experienced riders...
On we go towards Sandyford...next junction ,red light they filter to the top of the q...but the instructor doesnt leave enough room for the learner ,who's now half in the right turning lane and straight ahead....:rolleyes:
Finally at the M50 junction the instructor and co are in the left lane onto the M50 south...but they go straight on....:rolleyes::rolleyes:
I felt sorry for the learner as i'm sure he was so confused by the antics of the so-called instructor...
All i could see on the instructors back was what looked like Aaron ***** Rider training and a phone number...anyone know this clown.??.at 400 a pop it looks like easy money...

I did my IBT with Peter from Aaron Rider training. He was absolutely brilliant, and did nothing at all like that. In fact, he discouraged filtering. He said that you shouldn't start that until you are totally comfortable on the bike. He did talk about it though. When we were on the roads, all the time he guided you to the correct lane for the direction we were going.

Sounds very weird, unless someone is passing off as him. What bike was the instructor riding?

Maybe he was teaching him what not to do....lol.

Instructors are not supposed to filter while training as its illegal for learner permit holders to filter !
Any good instructor will make the student aware of that

How would competence be measured in the absence of a test and full license?

I'm just saying when I did my IBT I was never told it was illegal,i was told I could do it when I was confident on the bike.

Filtering is not illegal .. learner or not. As long as you abide by the rules of the road. Follow solid white line rules etc

Love to know what part of what law would apply in the case of a learner filtering?

Does sound weird, but i was shocked at his instruction, not only that but he was accelerating away quite hard for someone who was teaching...i dont think i saw an indicator being used once...TBH the learner didnt look comfortable at all..looked out of his depth....maybe they were just out for a blast...
    Some BMW adventure yoke btw...

Can you post a link to this law, saying it's illegal for learners and not full licenses?

Sounds mad alright. Very dangerous and careless. Last time I met Peter, he had sold his GS and was on an Africa Twin, I think.

He's one of the most highly decorated instructions, with all the right credentials. He was a former Army escort rider/instructor, etc etc. -

Find it hard to believe it was him that you saw, so wonder who it was.

:D:D:D:D:D...down with that sort of thing...:P

Certainly hope that this sort of "follow me around for an hour and get a cert" isnt creeping into the training...

I would be very surprised if it was Peter Bookey. Excellent instructor imo. Has to be an explanation for whatever was seen. I certainly wouldn't filter on ibt unless rider was experienced and just caught up in the system. Even then it would be only if safe to do so. 20 years training riders of all levels without incident on the road to date and as far as I know Peter would be the same. It could be possible a new instructor has been taken on under the company name maybe?

It was not Peter Bookey, sure his bikes are PLASTERED with sitckers advertising his school. You would have seen it TBH....

    Rubbish. Filtering is legal.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Or more like .. filtering is not illegal.

I noticed some German riders recently, just off the ferry, sitting in traffic. I was tempted to tell them they could filter.

Glad you didn't shout "FILTER...FILTER"......it might have sounded like something else to them.....:D
