Seen this post on facebook regarding Gareth Bales increase in muscle within his first year at real.I havent took alot of interest in his past but a few of the posters claim he was alot faster when he played for spurs minus the added muscle.
Others say the same happened to c ronaldo really fast at Man u then a tad slower with the added muscle at real.

If the added muscle would slow these players down surely they would have alot of eyes on performance alterations of the player and fix issues along the way.
If the fans spot this wouldnt the managers+coaching staff..
What do the s&c peeps here take on these opinions?

He still outpaces most players in a one-on-one sprint now.

The talk of him being faster at Spurs is mostly based on memories of him tearing Maicon a new one.

I've seen plenty to suggest he hasn't lost pace in Spain. Maybe he has if you actually test his sprint speed but not to a degree that he's suffered for it.

Ronaldo's game is very different now as well. He doesn't get the same opportunity to show how fast he is. He's also a few years older than he was at United.

Edit: turns out that picture is after his first full pre-season with Real so it was back in August 2014. I would venture it's not a huge amount more muscle than when he sprinted past a gang of Barcelona players two months earlier in the Copa Del Rey final.

He's bigger again now and if there has been a loss in pace,it's not hugely noticeable and he is stronger at holding off players on the ground and at winning headers now so he's definite the better for it.

    Aren't most 100/200 m sprinters pretty muscular?

This is the fastest man on the planet Earth.

Clearly upper body muscle mass is not an inhibiting factor.

I don't think he's anywhere near big enough for his mass to slow him down. He looks the ideal size for a sprinter.

He hasn't actually put on that much mass when you compare the 2 photos. In the first one, he's wearing a jersey with sleeves. In the second one, he's wearing a sleeveless training top which has much lighter material in it and he has a proper tan which is always going to make you look bigger.

If anything, it looks like he has dropped a percentage or two in bodyfat and put on a small amount of mass. Certainly not enough to have an impact on his pace.
