Got a new Micro B USB cable.
When I connect to the controller from any USB port I can feel it is connected as it vibrates, yet it does not actually work.
Then when I unplug it and go back to batteries it loses sync?

    Any ideas?
Would the fact that the cable is 3M long make any difference?

Actually, it does work in the xbox one USB socket and also the home audio amp USB socket, so it may appear to be a driver issue for the laptop USB.

Have you used the controller in the laptop with a different cable previously?

If you haven't, then maybe try installing the XB1 controller drivers:

Yes, but it was not a good quality one and needed replacing.

This is the one I got to replace it...

I'll give the 64bit driver a test tomorrow. Cheers.

Ok installed 64bit drivers ok. No change. :(

I have attached showing what happens in device manager when I plug in the controller.

I spent most of 5 hrs online chatting to xbox support and microsoft support yesterday. This was driving me round the bend as it used to work but now didn't. We all thought it had something to do with windows 10 drivers in an update recently received. I am due to contact them again today to resume the investigation, however, I have found the fix that works for me and allows me to power the controller via laptop usb and play the xbox one.

I disabled the controller in device manager. It works!

It powers the controller and allows you to use it after connecting your controller to the xbox usb plug in laptop/pc usb.

I will now contact them and let them know the fix. :)
