    Hi all.

I am looking to purchase a new PC/Laptop so that I can run AutoCAD and work from home. I currently own and iMac but I want a windows PC as well.

Recently my GF has mentioned getting me PS4 for my b'day/Xmas. I was thinking that might be a waste of money. People say that PS4's are really lacking in power and you're better off just building a gaming PC/rig. Is this right?

Can anyone lend me some advice about the possibility of building a PC that can run AutoCAD safely and also outperform a PS4 in terms of gaming?

    My budget is around £600.

I'd sooner have a gaming rig than a PS4. Different if you want a multimedia system for Netflix and the like but Smart TVs have likely occupied that niche.

If you want gaming, the PC is a much better call IMO.

Here's a VERY comprehensive list of reasons. I'll let the lads who actually know stuff about PCs take it from there.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

Can you convince your GF to spend the money on a GPU instead of a PS4?

Unless she wants to use it herself as well.

This build would do you well though:

What model of iMac is it? On anything recent you can use boot camp to run windows in a native mode (IE not a software emulation). It gives you a fully working PC with the specs of your iMac.

Depending on what games you play it may even run them.

Great reply! Thanks for that, I will look into it. That's exactly what I was after.

I can't remember the exact model but it's about 5 years old now. I'd rather just purchase a separate PC tbh. Thanks for the advice though.

Boot camp would definitely work on one 5 years old but much like any 5 year old PC it'd be restricted for any modern stuff and particularly games for which it would never have been ideal anyway!

Well worth getting a new one - I would never stand in the way of anyone who wants a new computer!!! ;)

2d isn't too taxing, the spec provided above should be well able for it. Unless you are using huge files/xrefs like topo data, in which case I would up the ram to 16gb.

    Hi Guys,

The time is almost here for me to buy my new PC. My budget has increased to around £800-£1000.

    I am considering two routes to go down;

1, Alienware - Can anyone offer any advice/experiences with these machines? They look slick but a lot of them only have 8GB of ram.

2, Build a tower as aforementioned in this thread. I'm likely to go to PC specialist or someone similar as I have no experience in building PC's. I don't have much time either.

Only buy Alienware if you absolutely must have a tiny, gimped machine, or a highly-priced laptop.

PCSpecialist are alright, just understand that you're paying a premium to have them build it for you.
You'll need to play around with their configurator a lot, too.
One good thing about them is they sell genuine Windows 7 / 10 Professional license keys for cheaper than the Windows store (£122 vs £189.99).
