I'm in the 800's havent heard anything yet! Do you know whether the physical or medical comes first if we past the interview??
Also any idea how long after the interview do the physical/medical happen???? On the off chance that I might pass the interview I really need to lose more weight and get fitter!

Nobody will be able to tell you for certain, at the moment they're interviewing approx 500 people during January (Up to an oom of 750-800 it would appear). If the trend continues of holding an interview cycle every month then those in the low 1000's may be interviewed in febuary, mid 1000's march. Late 1000's in april.

Again this is all just speculation.

Medical comes first, medical dates can be scheduled as soon as 2-3 weeks after receiving your interview results. If you have weight issues (Over a BMI of 30) start working on it now as this will hinder the progress of your application.

Has anyone completed the medical that wear glasses or contact lenses and if so is this an issue, were you told you must get laser eye surgery?

The eyesight requirements is outlined in the notes for candidates.

I wear glasses for driving and my prescription in my worst eye is -1.25
I had an eye test not too long ago with my optician and was informed that I'm just within the standard.
I do have money set aside for laser just in case.

If you fail on eyesight during the medical you are given an allocated time period if you require to get surgery in order to meet the standard.

I'd recommend taking the standard to your optician and seeing what the craic is.

I didn't think people with a higher OOM were after getting dates this is news to me ... My OOM is between 580 and 600 say.
I've no messages on my public jobs account since the day I got my results and my OOM.

I'm very early 700s for interview OOM, did anyone else not get an interview date or is it just me haha

Don't know if I'd take that comment seriously to be honest. I'm just a few places under 550 and I got called for this month. If that's any good to you. Haven't heard of anyone above that getting called. But best bet is probably to call them and see where there the oom for interview is at.

Best thing to do here is contact PAS and explain what's going on, especially if there's people with higher oom receiving interview dates

I was just wondering how difficult the interview actually is?. Anyone got any good tips ?? Be much appreciated.
Also looks like if I pass the interview I will have to sit the irish assessment because I done foundation for the leaving. Language requirements where different when I sat the leaving. Does anyone have any info on the irish assessment is it difficult ??
    Thanks in advance.

Quick question. Does your oom change significantly after the interview? And if so is it based on interview score/performance or just to account for those who failed the interview?

My OOM changed massively so I would say it is a mixture of both.

Try and keep the nerves at bay. I personally made my interview into more of a conversation and it made me feel a lot better about it. The interview panel were lovely and once you don't panic you will be alright. Just have the competencies prepared and look smart. There isn't much more you can do after that. Best of luck! :)

****ting myself now and my interview is still 14 days away.

Just looking through the posting history on this thread and haven't seen a single poster who's said that they failed the interview last time.

I wonder if this anecdotal 80% pass rate is true? It would appear that the pass rate is very high indeed.

I'd imagine most are eliminated at either the aptitude exam stage or the medical/physical stages. After that it's down to order of merit really. Looks like they're recruiting for the next couple of years so you should fancy it man.

Just wondering with anyone else waiting on a medical date are you worried that you haven't got yours yet or is this normal enough?

I'm a bit wary now and was thinking of giving them a call. I'm happy to wait but don't want to slip through the cracks either

Are your qualifications verified by Public Appointments? You won't get a medical date until everything with the qualifications and your form b is verified!

On the day of your interview you should have got an envelope back with your ID, leaving certificate etc and normally they write on the outside of that if they need anything else! Also did you need to send any extra information in for your form b? I'd ring Garda Appointments first and check - they could be waiting on further dates or something like that!

Just a copy of your birth cert (the long version) and leaving cert results. Bring the originals too.

Do you have to bring all the letters of reference to the interview with the super? I have my interview tomorrow but I won't have one of the letters of reference until next week

Do you mean your interview in Public Appointments? If so then yes - you hand them in with your form b! Written references are only optional anyway!

Just wondering why people here would want to be a Garda? There has been so much negativity the past few years, between whistle-blowers getting almost hounded out of their job, violent assaults on Garda and pay cuts, that there would seem very little incentive to be one. Unless people are following on a family tradition? There must be easier careers!

It's a simple answer for me. I have my qualifications and degree. I could be working in the U.K. or Oz etc, earning twice what a Garda earns, but I know I wouldn't be happy, and I've tried. There's nothing else I want to do. I think it has to be in you and you have to want it. I think there's a lot of people here on the same boat lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,743 ✭✭✭Wanderer2010

Thanks for the insight guys. It wouldn't be for me but a lot of people seemingly want to be in the Gardaí. Some no doubt just want to control people or just get off on the power but I would hope the screening will eliminate a lot of them.

Right people I'm Looking for help regarding form b! To start with I have no convictions and have only been involved with the gardai once when I was involved in a fight about 7 years ago, never got arrested for it but myself and the other guy had to make statements about it the next day. So the Garda over the case completely dropped it about 2 weeks later. No charges for either of us. Right so today when I was filling out form b I was unsure whether to say anything about it or not so I called into my local station and explained the situation to the Garda on the desk but he wasn't much help to be honest. He didn't know whether or not it would show up in a background check. Obviously I don't want declare it because it dosnt do me any favours but if it's on my record or whatever I will have to do so. So has anyone got any knowledge/advice the can share with me?

Declare everything! Something like that will 100% be on pulse. Dishonesty is an automatic no from the commissioner!

7 years is a long time to grow up, show you've have learned from your youthful mistakes and demonstrate that you're now a model citizen and give back to your community. Lying by omission is an automatic disqualification as far as I know, but I am open to correction. If you made a statement, chances are it's on record somewhere. Can you speak to the Garda involved? Can you ask to speak to your local sergeant, come clean, explain, show that the experience set you on the straight and narrow and ask how it will affect your vetting? I think honesty and integrity is the way to go on this one but I really don't know how it will affect the outcome for you, sorry.

You can request a copy of your personal data held by the Gardai but I think it can take up to 40 days. Plus it's your local sergeant who starts the background checks on you, so if you request the data and you've visited the station and someone has run your name through PULSE recently it would make me suspicious. I'd be asking myself what are they hiding. That's my two cents anyway.

I am sure the sergeant and superintendent will want to know how you manage your anger and deal with adversity now. There will be plenty of people trying to provoke you all day every day on the job and you will need to show that you will never lash out at any of them.

I found some of the UK police sites give very detailed information on what will and will not impact on your vetting. Might be good to have a read through some of them. Our system is probably not too different from theirs.

You should be fine if that's all it was. Just be honest on the form b and when you get called to meet your sergeant/super! As the other user said turn it around show how you have taken experience from the incident and that you're a good member of the community now. Good luck :)
