Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well most peoples attention is probably focused on the Olympiad or the City of Dublin this weekend, but just a reminder that the Munster Championships and Joe Browne Cup take place in Ennis on the weekend of 16th-18th September, so there's still a week to get your entries in. There is a prize fund of €2000 (subject to entry), the tournament will be FIDE rated and you can enter at http://www.munsterchessunion.org/munster_championship/entry_form.php

Full details of eligibility criteria are at the Munster Chess Union website (basically you need to be from Munster or living in Munster at least a year)

Any idea of the numbers this year?

I dont have a list of entrants so far. Entries are going to Gerry Graham I think. Maybe he can post a list. There was a good number last year, hopefully more of the same this year!

I think this is the entries in the over 1400 section

    Though I'm not 100% certain.

I think it also should be noted that the winner of this tournament will receive an automatic entry into the Irish Championships next year (as they would be Munster Champion). I suspect it will be won by someone who could already qualify by rating.

    And how's the under1400 looking?

The winner won't receive an automatic entry.

At least not under any rule I've ever seen. Can you provide a reference to the contrary?

Actually that looks like last year's entries. I've heard that Paul Walsh will be defending his title. Phillip Short and Rory Quinn also expected to play.

You're right! I've re-read the ICU motion that passed in 2014:

"Players in the Irish Chess Championships may have the rating
requirement ignored provided they are nominated by:
    a. The ICU Executive (maximum 3 players)
    b. The Junior Officer (maximum 3 players who must be under-18)
    c. Provincial delegates (maximum of 1 player per province)
    d. The tournament organisers (maximum 1 player)

The Irish Women’s Champion, Irish Veteran’s Champion, Irish Intermediate Champion, Irish Open Champion are automatically nominated to play in the Irish Championships irrespective of rating.
    "

I thought that last paragraph included the provincial champions too. I think I may have assumed that the provincial delegate would automatically nominate their provincial champion each year.

Is this not the 2015 results?

It is the Munster only Championships so I'd expect entries to be similar since it's exclusive to Munster players only.

I am not, though I'd love to. Not far from my folks place in Miltown Malbay, and still have fond memories as a Junior going down there for the All-ireland club championship and getting addicted to a PacMan arcade machine in the bar.

Last time you played here Joe was in 2005 with Phibsboro in the NCC I think. Hopefully there will be good numbers for the tournament this weekend!
