Watching an episode of The Simpsons here and the aliens in it had a sign for 'Earth Capital'.

What would you consider as Earth capital and why?

New York without question really. London a close second but given how important the US is on the world stage, NY trumps all

    Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

Japanese would run it well and it would provide a reminder of the potential of man's inhumanity to man.

In a lot of sci fi, it's Buenos Aires.
And then it usually gets destroyed.
So, for that reason, why not Dublin.

It's not even the capital of its own country though.

In fact it's not even the capital of its own state.

The most impressive city ever on Earth would have been Rome 2000 years ago.

Even today the classical ruins are mind blowing.

I am sure the other world religions and none would be impressed with that selection.

What about one of the places the Japanese raped and pillaged their way through for the same reason?

London - the financial capital of the world.

Tokyoians would probably think of their city as deserving.

Probably Washington. That's what all the movies say.

A capital isn't the biggest city, or financial centre. It's the centre of political power.

It might have been before the Brexit vote.

Istanbul straddling East and west while not a Capital city at the moment is a plus I think and more importantly not being in one of the world's major powers. Tokyo as the world's largest deserves consideration but I think Istanbul being on the planets major landmass and having a history intertwined with so many cultures trumps it.

Albany is the capital of New York state.

I would vote for New York, where the United Nations HQ is, even if it is very ineffective and needs major reform.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

The most powerful people in the world are in Washington DC so I'd have to go with that. New York and Tokyo would be the economic capitals, very difficult to say what the cultural capital of the world is though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭wakka12

Theres many different choices, hard to pick just one. NYC as a financial, London as cultural, Paris as Historical, Tokyo as techonolgical, Istanbul at the centre of the old world, jerusalem as a religious capital of 3 of the worlds major religions. Many cities could make an argument to be the world capital

To be the capital of Earth, the city would need to be in GMT to suit everyone. It would need to be s neutral city with little religious influence or aligance to any one other country. It must have good sea and air access. Be away from fault lines or any other natural disaster zone.

We tick most of the boxes

Ah, I know. I was just trying to be clever as about 6 separate posters mentioned that NY city is not even the capital of it's own state, and therefore should not be considered the capital of earth.
