    Nice one thanks.

Concision is the name of the game (not either of our forté's) so we will get there :D

I make a fairly decent editor. Will be home this afternoon so will take a stab if that suits.

There's an unbolded sentence that's driving me nuts.

So in the rules section you can probably change it from this:
Normal boards.ie rules still apply when playing a game (e.g. no multiple accounts, no attacking a poster, don’t post bold stuff), and each game will have its own set of specific rules, which are key to read before the game starts. Some of the more common rules are:

    • No editing or unthanking of posts during a game
    • Try not to be offended, but no personal abuse to be directed at players, especially concerning real life situations
    • No cheating, no mass reveals (organising for everyone to reveal their characters all at once, no copy & pasting information from PMs from the mods, no copy pasting from backrooms (COP).
    • No discussing the game outside of the forum (via PM, instant messager, whatsapp, pigeon carrier etc)
    • Play in the best interests of your character, but not at all costs, make sure you are having fun and that the rest of the people are too!
    • Respect the mods decisions
    • Be active and post as much as you can, even if you haven’t a clue whats going on!

Finally, as the Werewolf forum is a community, with some players playing monthly games for (at the time of this being written) almost 2 years, there are lots of previously told jokes, terminology and acronyms that will be used in a game. Don’t worry about these – you can always ask what they mean, and soon you will be making your own that will become part of the forums history!

This sentence makes ye lot sound cliquey and that couldn't be further from the truth.

I'd separate out talking about terminology and acronyms out. New players are welcomed and encouraged; feel free to ask about terminology and acronyms in the game, questioning everything is the name of the game and you might even uncover a wolf or role with the answer. as with any community there are in jokes but join in soon you will be making your own that will become part of the WW forums history!

Few changes, probably still a bit too long if I'm honest.
    FAQ for new players!

Hello and welcome to the Werewolf Forum!

    What is Werewolf?

Werewolf is an online game (sometimes called Mafia elsewhere on the internet) whereby a group of players sign up to play a game, with the goal of identifying which of them has been assigned the role of a werewolf.
Each day, through deductive reasoning and (vigourous) questioning, the village, which is the total group of players signed up the game, try to find the wolves and lynch them, until there are no wolves left. At the same time, the wolves have an opportunity to kill off villagers (munch them). Typically, the village wins a game if all the wolves are killed, or the wolves win if they achieve parity with the remaining villagers (no. of wolves = no. of villagers).

There is lots of variation on this mechanic, including the introduction of special roles and powers, but the above is how it basically works. To see a list of some of the roles and powers used, you can view them here.

    Who runs each game?

Games are run by a number of game mods (who volunteer their time and energy to do so) each month (and sometimes more than once a month), and the player spots are filled on a first come first serve basis (open to everyone on boards). A handy list of the game schedule is listed here

    Where do I sign up?

If you would like to keep updated on when the next game is starting/sign ups for the next game are starting, please visit this thread and click the follow thread button. When a new game is announced by the game mods, it will pop up in that thread, and you can sign up for the game by posting that you want to play!

Do I need to do anything before I play?

When playing a game, the game will typically be run using a thread on the Werewolf forum. You need to request access to here which can be done via this thread.

Players are assigned roles primarily by random assignment (or randing). Typically power roles in the game will be given a backroom on a seperate site so they can post their own thoughts and give their orders. You will be PMed login details for this at the start of the game.

Its important to remember not to ask questions on thread about your role in the actual game thread. Having a role can be valuable information, and you may not want to share what it is too early. A good tip is that, for the duration of the game, only trust the mods!

    Anything else I should know?

Normal boards.ie rules still apply when playing a game (e.g. no multiple accounts, no attacking a poster, don't post bold stuff), and each game will have its own set of specific rules, which are key to read before the game starts. Some of the more common rules can be found listed in the Werewolf Charter

In addition to this, there are distinctions in game between day and night phases within the game. Typically, the day phase is from 10am (when the munch happens and the wolves get their daily kill) and 9pm (when the lynch happens and the village gets their daily kill), although this can vary from game to game (and you will be told when the game starts).
This can also vary if the mods need to speed the game up (typically we try to finish games within by the Friday after they start, so mods can implement a speed day and have, for example, 2 lynches and 2 munches per day on the Thursday and Friday, to ensure the game doesn't run into the weekend.

The Werewolf forum is a very open, welcoming and fun community that has grown hugely since it first started. Everyone is welcome to play and learn as they go, but it is very important to understand that while you are learning during a game, its better to post at a minimal rate and try your best rather than drop out.

Dropping out forces the mods to make changes to the game to rebalance the teams. An example of this would be a player who was assigned the role of bodyguard on the good team dropping out. The bodyguard protects a player each night against the wolves, so if that player drops out, not only do the villagers lose a player, but they lose the role that player had. If at all possible, its best to talk to your game mods before you drop out, and they will advise on how to proceed. Joining a game can be a little overwhelming at first, but the longer you try to play along and keep active, the more you will understand, and the less overwhelming it will be. Your game mods know this too and are always there to help!

Added Clara's addendum there too ;)

Great work gang - thanks! Probably do need to keep going and get it down further. And while i was reading Necros version, i remembered that my next job was to take a look at that role list. Its come up a few times that people have checked it out and been mislead by it. Probably needs a disclaimer or something saying 'actual in game roles may vary from these descriptions'.

The start bit is fairly tight. But the bottom bit (below).....could we do without this (or at least take a machete to it)? Maybe it needs to be explained somewhere else. We really should have a glossary of terms. We always end up explaining them anyway. For acronyms as well as common terminology.

I think you could, and in place just put Clara's addendum. I think the stuff about drop outs (while important) can be off putting to new players a bit

Well if I posted a link to a pornographic video for example I'd likely not just be kicked from the game but probably site banned as per Boards own T&C's.

I am happy with that version. If there are further edits people can make them and repost the full thing, and ill update the beginners FAQ post.

    Thanks all!

  • Registered Users Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Next job is that roles list.

What i would like to propose is that we pick out some of the more common roles and some of our common terminology and put them in the OP of a new thread; and then have the rest of the roles listed as roles that COULD come up, but perhaps with some variation, with will depend on the game in question and what is outlined by the game mods.

So what would be great to get help with is the terminology we use that beginners have trouble picking up / have to have explained to them.

    FFA
    D0 / N0 / D1 etc etc
    Bussing
    CFD
    ISO

If you have any others, please name them. If you want to define them too thats great. If not, ill give it a shot when i have a full list.

    Pocketting.

D0 does not exist. Anybody who uses it is a wolf and trying to sow confusion on the thread, lynch them first.
    N0 = Night 0, or pregame.
D1 = Day 1, a lynch happens at the end of day.
N1 = Night 1, Night ends with a munch at dawn.
    D2= Day 2 etc....

Lynch: where the villagers vote to eliminate a player they believe is a wolf from the game

Munch: where the wolves eliminate a player from the game

    SK: Serial Killer

FFA - Free For All - give a list with reasoning of your top suspicions for wolves

    D0 / N0 / D1 etc etc - shortened terminology for the phase the game is in. EG: N0 = Night 0, D1 = Day 1 etc.

Bussing - where a wolf team member shops another on their team to the village for village credit.

CFD - Chinese Fire Drill - rapid changing of votes onto one candidate at the end of the day phase

ISO - to isolate (ISO) a player's posts and analyse their content.

EOD - End of Day, ie when the lynch happens.

Flip - to learn a player's alignment on their death, ie: I would like to see Necro's flip

    Green/Red - indicative of good/evil alignment - green = good, red = evil

Pocketing - where a wolf gains the trust of a villager

Tunnelling - where a villager incessantly and relentlessly believes another villager is a wolf

Hit me with a few more folks :D

Twilight - a sometimes used phase between day and night

Mind control - a power a role may have to force another player to do crazy things on the game thread

Shake cages / trees / whatever you are shaking yourself - testing player's reactions through various methods.

Lean - your personal feeling on a specific player ie: I lean good on Baggly

Ranking list - list of players and your feelings on them from either village to wolf or vice versa

Genieing - appearing nearly immediately on the game thread after your name is mentioned having not posted prior to this for a while

Lock clear/wolf - where a player is considered definitively as a particular alignment

TWTBAW - 'Too Wolfy To Be A Wolf' Where a player's actions are deemed so wolfy they cannot be a wolf

OMGUS - 'Oh My Gosh U Suck' used when a player accuses another after first being accused by said player purely because they accused them.

Wagonomics - lynch vote analysis used by players to attempt to find wolves

MYLO - 'Mislynch-and-Lose' If the village mislynches incorrectly they will lose, however there is an opportunity to 'No Lynch'.

No Lynch - where the village votes not to lynch anyone for that particular phase

WIFOM - 'Wine in front of me' A multi-layered explanation for this one, best described here
