'How I caught my online scammer
    is from the BBC

    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-37348014
with this blog about the event
    https://blog.haschek.at/post/f3281
    where it says
His IP address from opening the image I sent him (also confirmed his location)
    which was posted

    here
    https://www.pictshare.net
which seems to be the scammed guys own site so I wonder is that why he was able to link the image and IP address.

    Thanks as always

It's not the image that provides the IP address - it's the logs on the webserver hosting the image. The same general technique is used by companies running mailing lists to try and generate profiles of their subscribers and when/how they check their email (which is why turning off embedded images is a good idea).

English is not my first language but I thought that
which seems to be the scammed guys own site so I wonder is that why he was able to link the image and IP address.
    Has the same meaning as
The opposite, pictshare is the site owned by the person who got scammed. He uploaded a picture of the gift cards as proof to the scammer that they were real. The scammer looked at the picture and as a result his IP address at the time was recorded.

So back to the TEFL class notes :(

Anyway thanks for the answers, as always.
