Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Rang the 2 main Toyota dealers in Cork City this morning , either side of the river, asking which motor oil I should put in my 2005 Avensis 1.6 vvti petrol .

First one said 10W40 Semi synthetic all the way, "shur thats what it left the factory with.."

I was happy with that answer, but I just thought I'd double check..

Second dealer said 5W30 Fully Synthetic , I asked what it would have had from the factory and he said "5W40 fully synthetic from the factory... but we always put 5w30 in..)

It can take both as far as I know and a few other types but the recommended is 5W30 - this is what my wife & I put in our 2004 Avensis 1.6 vvti.

5w/30 semi synthetic, a1 spec, is what i'd use.

That's what I used to use on my 04 and no issues.

Neither would be wrong, but id have a preference for 5w30 fully synth unless it was burning a silly amount.

Agreed .. I was going to put 5w30 fully synthetic in.. but I thought it odd that both main dealers were 100% sure about 2 different oil grades it left the factory with.
A mechanic friend of mine who worked 15 years in Toyota outside the city says they always used 10w40 semi in all petrol vvti oil changes.
Either way it's not burning a drop between oil changes so I don't think 10w40 would do any harm.

A 5W30 or 0W30 wouldn't do either. Personally I would always chose a synthetic oil over anything else.

It can take both of those oils. If it's burning a drop it will probably be better to ise 10w40.
