    Hi

Anyone with any knowledge of the TCD Chapel choir or University of Dublin Choral Society? Wanting to join one but not sure which...

I'll preface this by saying I'm involved in the Chapel Choir and really enjoy it.

I don't know much about DU Choral, but I do know that this term they're doing the B minor mass. Its director of music/conductor is David Leigh. The society's in very good hands with him. You should hear him play the organ too. Mind blowing.

By contrast, the Chapel Choir sings new music twice weekly in the college chapel as well as at extra events like the Christmas Carol Service, at Commons, in the Dining Hall, in the Long Library, etc etc. It's not a religious society, though, despite the context in which it sings normally. The conductor is a student but all the music is overseen by a professional director of chapel music.

I recommend trying both and seeing which you like the feel of more. It's a high-workload environment either way because the B minor mass is no slouch, but it's a piece in more or less one style for the whole term, whereas the Chapel Choir covers a very broad range of music from the Renaissance to the present day. There's a lot of it too so your sight reading improves by default.
