Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I bought a 3 year old Volvo S40 1.8L SE with about 25k miles in 2011 for ~ €13k.

    Below link is for a 5 year old V50 for ~ €16k, granted its a 2L diesel estate but the price difference is nuts.

    I'm not really sure your example is clear or relevant. Way too many differences and variables.

    Plus it's a very small sample size (2 cars)

    Ok, a 3 year old S40 below @ ~ €17k, €4k more than what I paid in 2011 for a similar car

    Prices took a dip in 2011-12. There was fierce value to be had.

    Certain things come into demand and fall out of demand just as quick.

    Some anecdotal evidence as opposed to speculation is the following, I bought a mint 2004 petrol 5 series sport in 2013, so 9 years old for 2450 Euro. Couldn't give them away.

    If I was to look for an 07 now with similar spec, mileage it would be about 6-8k. Although they are asking prices I still think there is no demand for a petrol car with 1000 Euro annual tax bill so could get a good one for 5k but no way as cheap as 3 years ago.

    There were feck all new cars sold in 2011 so there are feck all 5 year old cars for sale now.

    In Feb I got 18.5k on a trade in for a 5 year old Verso that cost 31k new. The dealer had it sold before I picked up my new car.

    Cheap tax has kept post 08 prices pretty strong and fears over insuring older cars is aiding this too.

    But below this everything is as cheap as ever.
    For example at the very bottom of the scale cars have never been cheaper;
    Taxed and nct'd cars for under €500 is a thing that was virtually non existent 2 years ago now this certainly isn't the case.

    There'd be fierce value to be had for first time drivers if insurers weren't virtually banning them from driving old cars.

    Compared to other countries, older s/h cars are cheap as chips here.
    Was in France for a weeks holliers, and the price of S/H cars are way higher than here. Citroen Xantia's running up to 2000 Euro, while you wouldn't give one away here. A 1996 Polo, well over 1200 Euro. People hold onto cars a lot longer, and the average age of cars are much higher than here in Ireland.
