I am trying to salvage some files from an old Desktop computer that stopped working

I have removed the 3 Discs and after watching all the experts on youtube have decided to try my hand at moving files onto a back up machine
Money is tight and I didn't want to pay the 100e quoted by the local "techie"

probably nothing too exciting on them but as its the first computer bought for the family bound to be photos and music.

First time to try my hand so here is a few basic stupid questions
The physical size of removed discs seem to be 100x150 x24mm ..and one was 16 mm?
Discs are about 15 years old, one was connected by a ribbon other 2 was a plug.
Any advice on the type of enclosure to get, probly only used this one time to move data ....can they also be used to work DVD drive I might salvage you tube seemed to think so.

Those are old "IDE" disks by the sounds of your detail. Any newer hardware will use "SATA" a different connection type (cable instead of the ribbon type you see on yours)

If you want to recover data with the view of dumping them you can get usb to IDE adapters on eBay. You will need a power supply with this and then another machine or laptop

This would be a caddy enclosure. So you fit the drive in this, power it up and connect to a PC or laptop to read the data

Look up IDE connector first and make sure a picture matches what you have on the drive so you can confirm that it's actually IDE

If you are going with that drive caddy, I'd try your local PC World first - they have them for €24. I know it's a coupe of Euro dearer but you could get it today rather than having to wait.

The ide drives 3.5inch attach to my ide caddy by plugging in the ide ribbon cable, data cable ,to a data socket male ,
and a short female to female 4 socket power cable .

    eg
to an ide data and power socket on the front of the caddy .
2 separate sockets on my caddy
power socket is 4 pin .
be careful when removing and plugging in the ide data cables ,.
so as not to bend the drive pins .
    http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/N18AAOSw~otWdeVQ/s-l300.jpg

ide caddy needs it own power supply ,
the usb from the caddy is plugged into the pc to send drive data only to pc.
Connect 3.5 Drive to caddy .
    Turn on caddy .
Wait 30-50 seconds for drive to spin up.
the plug usb cable into a pc or laptop to acess the data on the drive.

3.5 IDE drive will show up on laptop as drive e,f,g etc
    external drive 300gig, etc

ALways switch off pc,or laptop ,disconnect usb cable ,
    before you turn off caddy.

You Can buy a 3.5inch ide /sata caddy about 25-30 euro.
sata drives use red ,black thin cables about a quarter inch wide.

if you have both drives in pic above,

    You,ll need a sata /ide caddy.
cost around 35 euro in maplins or pcworld.

Heres another option if you have 50 quid from maplins.

as well as reading your IDE drives you can read SATA drives a USB hub and a card reader
So you continue to use it for other stuff. It won;t just be a once off purchase.

Its possible to use the power cable from any pc power supply to power the ide drive,
    see here ,
    https://usb.brando.com/prod_img/zoom/UCABL005000_03_L.jpg

then you need another ide to usb adaptor to plug the drive into
    a laptop or pc.
    http://www.electronic-recycling.ie/

At the link above they sell old dell pcs with old type ide drive slots ,20-30 euros .
Pcs are sold with no ram or drives .
Buy a pc with 1 gig ram for 30 euro .

    or just buy a caddy.
They have pcs that have both ide and sata ports onboard motherboard.
    30 euro approx.
Ring them first ,to make sure someone is there ,
to deal with pc sales .
    Before you go there .

Thanks guys for the help and advice, I managed to get quite a bit off the Discs
although it did prove that we wasted a lot of time on the old internet back in the early 00s...:o
