Thanks to all folks who replied to other thread. This next question is a bit more specific.

If you had to pick three specific and practical things that would markedly improve lives of people living in Galway city, however with a condition that each of these things has to be achievable within 1 year from initiation - what would they be ?

Aim is to come up with ideas that are achievable, would make a positive
difference and have a long term impact.

    1) Remove all financial power from anyone even remotely involved in city council/corporation and give it to a government appointed administrator. They clearly can't manage any project they're involved in.
    2) Lock down the plans and start the outer city by-pass.
    3) Barring other ideas, make me El Presidente of the city for life.

If nothing else, I think number 3 is easily achievable.

Are you working for the council or a firm engaged by the council to come up with some strategic plans?

Park and ride schemes for workers at Racecourse, airport, and 2 other locations with capacity for 2000+ cars with employer /council subsidy

Bike schemes to be extended to NUIG and GMIT- why dont they have them anyway ?, Salthill and Renmore

Outdoor gyms , Salthill- South Park, Eyre Sq, Tirellan, Merlin Park

Sounds more like a college project.

It's a good question to ask though.

    1. Implement a working and reliable way to monitor bus times and location; and let it be accessible from my phone, therefore I'm not running for a bus that's either already gone or is 20 minutes late. This would make me more inclined to use public transport as opposed to driving into town if I need to be somewhere at a specific time.

    2. Push through the sale of the Corrib Great Southern Hotel to be revamped and utilised as accommodation for nearby GMIT.

    3. Another bridge over the feckin' Corrib already...

Express buses would make a huge difference. It's not uncommon for the 409 route to take an hour or more to get to Parkmore.

Know that they rarely do anything but here is a petition to gauge interest in a City Center to Parkmore express bus service.

Ha ha - No not at all - No vested interest at all other than I live in the city.

In fact am completely disillusioned with our political leadership in the City @ all levels

I am asking questions from perspective that - often the public itself has really good ideas on how to solve
issues and improve lives - would love if there was a mechanism to easily channel these into action - give
the public a voice to have good ideas heard - without all the political or vested interest garbage.

3 things that help Galway in a year.

1 getting the traffic centre employed with cameras (which include red light cameras) at all junctions to adjust traffic flow accordingly.

2 getting the alleviation of maximum building heights in planning laws so that more modern housing can be built upwards to stop the sprawl

3 the re invigoration of salthill. It was nice a hub of activity and nightlife could and should be again

    Quick wins:
More and better enforcement of existing roads, parking, cycling, pedestrian legislation - traffic should flow better.

Clean out all the storm drains around the city.

Clear out and tidy up existing paths, parks and public spaces.

Power wash and repaint any building that might need it.

All traffic related as this seems to be killing our city and reducing peoples quality of life.

    1. Immediately start phase of the city bypass which involves connecting the M6 motorway directly to 2 of the largest industrial parks (Parkmore and Ballybane ) in the city > 10000 people commuting on a daily basis into both. Park and ride in the race course is not a solution.

    2. A bus network which works for the journeys people make - one example knocnacarra/ salthill direct to above mentioned industrial parks making use of the N6 route not via the city. Also look at getting more public transport solutions for school kids (massive difference in traffic during school holidays).

3a. A direct link (with no other access/ exits) from the M6 motorway to a multi story car park (several thousand capacity) in the new docks development. Automated Shuttle tram service to eyre square - should be a condition of the go ahead for this development.

3b. No further developments allowed in NUIG / NUIG Hospital until adequate parking is put in place. No further developments in above mentioned industrial estates until access is improved.

    a few others
    - development plan for Salthill to include leisureland and turning the village back into a tourist destination.
    - re paving of shop street - current annual claims will pay for it
    - provide more public access to waterways for all types of water users
    - move NUIG hospital to Merlin Park - site to be used for residential and light commercial purposes only.
    - an independent business advisor for city council to ensure new ideas are not killed by unnecessary red tape
    - a new campus with convention center, concert venue and municipal stadium for all sports
    - more bike rental depots spread out over the city
    - outdoor gyms (like renville) in all public parks

    My 2 cents!

    1. Clean storm drains/gulleys regularly as pg633 outlined. Many have grass growing in them. Completly blocked.
    2. Improve permability for people who walk, cycle, buggie users, wheelchair users etc in our estates and between Estates - a major problem in newer pars of the city like KnocknaCarra. Often would just invole knocking small section of walls, installing more street lighting
    3. Install bike racks(toaster style) on every inner city street

    My few

    - Replace lighted pedestrian crossings with twice/three times as many standard european pedestrian crossings through out the city
this will make the city way more pedestrian friendly, slow traffic but also improve traffic flow
    - Widen all single car roads within 6 miles of the city. e.g. all the roads between knocknacarra, bushypark
    - Change normal retail opening times from 10-7pm during the week
    - Stagger school opening times
    - Make all bus lanes open to traffic at non peak times - as in Dublin and other cities
    - Extend bike scheme much wider - barna, college, ballybrit etc
    - Extend prom to Barna

    1. Better quality of buildings, both structurally and aesthetically.

    2. More Gardai on the beat.

    3. Overall better thinking when considering civil engineering projects.

1: Better lighting in Eyre Square.

2: Put a roof over the Spanish Arch, because there's time when all you want is a few cans on a rainy day.

3: More homeless hostels. Something I've noticed more recently is the number of people sleeping rough. They also seem to have taken up outside the Foster Court hotel (is that gone?)
