The Xbox Gaming thread was starting to fill up with posts about 4k/HDR TVs, so I figured we should set up a thread dedicated to discussion of them. With the release of the Xbox One S, and the upcoming PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio, it's going to be a topic that's discussed more and more.

Here's a few resources and general information for anyone looking to buy a 4k/HDR tv:

4K is pretty well settled at this stage, but HDR isn't support on all 4k TVs yet, so that's something to watch out for.

Distance guide to see if you'll notice resolution difference.

Thats a handy guide for seating distances, I've a 50" at the moment and I'm definitely too close to it as I have to turn my head to look at the corners. It makes playing games with a minimap akward as the time it takes for me to refocus on the map and take in the information is that bit longer. I was thinking gaming monitor, but a 40" ish tv may be a better option all round.

  • I've been doing some further research. Some concerns in relation to it actually doing HDR 10

    See this on reddit

Ideally you'd want a 10 bit panel. Unfortunately they're the more expensive models. Some TV's will play HDR10 stuff no problem but the panel itself is only 8 bit.

I went onto Richer Sounds last night, sorted it so I was looking at only 4K HDR tv's from low to high in price then start making my way through them reseaching the true panel type. I think I got to £800 andn they still were only 8 bit panels.

I was looking up stuff on that too. I think a lot of people think that if a tv is HDR then they are good to go but i think it's only the more expensive sets that have the HDR that makes the difference.

This details that there is HDR support in the 6000 models but and then there is HDR 10 in models 7000 and baove

Yea, the only one's that i could afford only have the 'HDR Processing' and not the top of the line one. I'll have to wait until i win the lotto unfortunately.

It's not until you get up to the Samsung KS7000 (£1099) that the 10 bit panels begin to appear. http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/samsung/ue49ks7000/sams-ue49ks7000

Probably any of the UHD Premium sets.

I'll probably end up going with the old 8 bit, HDR10 support myself after all :pac:

    To confirm:

That model has software HDR but not HDR 10 from what I understand now

Yeah, from what I'm understanding, their won't be good, cheap 4k/HDR TVs for another year I'd say.

I'm still tempted by an Xbox One S, but I won't be getting a 4k TV until the right model comes along at the right price, so I'll probably end up waiting for Scorpio by the time that happens.

I've been trying to research as much as possible on HDR.

I've found my go to site is http://www.displayspecifications.com/

Put in the product code and check the specs. The key is to check the number of colours the tv can display. 16 million won't give you HDR even if the tv is advertised as HDR. You want a 10 bit panel but 8 bit is ok as long as it has frame rate control.

The Samsung KS8000 sets are the one's I'm so close to pulling the trigger on.

    That answers that then?

Just checked mine, and even though she only has an 8-bit panel, she has FRC and can display 1,073,741,824 colours!

One billion colours is too many!

Mentioned earlier in the thread that I bought it ex. display from Harvey's for €850 back in June. Still has the €2499 sticker on the back of it!

I don't think it has HDR?

Edit: It has streaming HDR support via Netflix, Amazon etc but not via HDMI is it?

Or maybe all my watching of American Pickers paid off! ;)

I'm going mad I didn't get something bigger. The whole set is smaller than the 49" set it replaced. So even though it's 55", it's not imposing in the slightest.

The 4K stuff does look good on it I must admit. And the HD 3D is superb. A bit of DSE when watching sports, but I can live with that.

It's not stated anywhere, but it has.

Think LG called it Ultra Luminance or some tripe.

    Obligatory youtube clip....

I've nothing that'll play HDR via hdmi, but it displays HDR via my external hdd.

Just got an email notification from Argos that they've up to one third off selected TVs.

I know the thread title has TV in it but since its in the gaming forum you could also consider buying a 4k monitor with 10bit HDR if all you want it for is gaming.

Two examples which can be got for €300-€400
