Which would be suitable for such a project?
I think marine ply is out of the question on price.
I could paint the bejasus out of it for protection

    Thanks

Most ply is 'WBP' - weather and boil proof. If painted , it should be fine. Never used the green weather proof MDF but I'd be dubious about it anyway.

How about breaking down a few pallets and recycling the planks, painted they will last well.

I suggest making the box out of lengths of decking wood, as opposed to using plywood. It should look better.

Ply tends to warp unless set into a frame. Personally I would use blockboard which has fallen out of fashion but is still available.

wbp is absolutaley useless even if painted for outside use. birch ply or marine ply are the pick of the external grades. the green mdf is "moisture resistant" going by their spec but its really only a slightly better version of mdf best suited for window boards or the likes. theres a fully water and weather resistant mdf but it can only be got in specialist suppliers and runs around 130 a sheet.
