    What's with that?

I think this is the Beeb going too far the other way in reaction to the deserved criticism they got for letting the likes of Moira Stuart and Arlene Phillips go for no good reason at all whilst letting Bruce Forsyth dodder around long after he should have been put out to pasture. These were blatantly age-related releases from duty and the heat they took was deserved but the antidote isn't to let go of menfolk for no reason either. Just stop firing women once they get over 50, Beeb, and you're set! No other action required.

On the hiring minorities thing - I'm a fan of meritocracy, but studies have shown that with identical CVs, applicants with ethnic-sounding names have trouble landing interviews. So many minorities find it difficult to even get a chance. It's hard to know what to do there because even on merit, minorities can be subconsciously discriminated against. Positive discrimination is ham-fisted but subconscious discrimination appears to be a problem.

The BBC hates white people which has been pretty obvious since the early 2000s.

White people think they hate white people. Black people think they hate black people, Tories think they hate them, labour supporters as convinced the BBC is run by conservatives.

Oh God, no. Oh Jesus Christ, they can't sack Jon Holmes!!! Anyone but Jon Holmes!!!

    Who is Jon Holmes?

The Now Show is crap anyway. They should call it "The Then Show" because it's been using the same jokes since 1998. Hopefully Paul Merton and Ian Hislop will get axed next. At this stage, they could replace Merton with the discarded limb of a black, one-armed Muslim lesbian and it would still be funnier.

I don't believe a word of this because you couldn't tell a candidate that they didn't get a job because they are white. Unless of course equality laws are completely different in the UK? Are they?

There was some period drama on BBC during the year, possibly Versailles, but they had a black woman playing a very white historical figure. (By 'very white', I mean that I checked some images/paintings of the real historical person, and she'd out-pale the Gothiest Goth.) What's the deal with that? Artistic licence? Diversity?

In Hollywood, it's usually the opposite where often a character written as some ethnicity or other in the source material will be filled by a white person.

    Yeah, that's wrong too.

Meh. The luvies at the BBC have been telling us little people that diversity is our strength and must be embraced. Well let them embrace it now. Oh I'm sorry, you lost your job to a Somali? Well maybe you should have worked harder then.

It's a bit weird where TV decides to pick and choose skin colour.

Whenever they show prehistoric stone age peoples they're nearly always white. Even though white people didn't exist back then. Same for Egyptians, while they may not have been exclusively black, there was certainly a large population of black people living there. It sounds like they had every colour of the rainbow living there and wouldn't look like the egyptians we know today.

If you are Irish it would be a strange case to take, but you should certainly pursue it and let us know how you got on.

What is the relevance of the demographic breakdown of the UK?

It's always good to show just how many white people there are in the UK I suppose. With all the hysteria that comes from the little englanders you'd think they were in the minority.

The whole BBC being hideously white comments. You know as the population at large is white.

Those comments were made over 15 years ago by someone no longer at the BBC.

The BBC is more than just a service for people within the UK. The BBC is a global corporation. You do realise that any diversity targets set by them include all employees of the BBC around the world?

On what merit ? Skin colour has zero bearing on what way you perform in the job. Same with sexuality. You do know the BBC is a British media outlet paid for by the British taxpayer.

I don't work for the BBC, nor do I care what they do. If you have an issue with their diversity targets, take it up with them.

I do know that the british taxpayer contributes towards the BBC, however the BBC also makes money from BBC Worldwide. The BBC employs thousands of people worldwide. They set their targets in relation to all employees worldwide, including countries where the poor white heterosexual man is in the minority.

On the face of it the BBC seems to be doing a sterling job and the new diversity measures are going the extra mile. But anyone who has worked on a BBC production would have trouble matching the 13.4% figure with the reality of being there.

As we can tell from the data which, as a commendably transparent organisation the BBC publishes, the 13.4% figure is vastly inflated by two sets of people – people working in finance and on programmes broadcast outside of the UK.
When you take out the two business divisions and the World Service, the percentage of BAME people actually working at the BBC making output for a British audience is just 9.2%.

If you have a problem with this, take it up with the BBC.

In the UK , but not here obviously, travellers are an ethnic minority.

    An under represented minority ?
