People who's feet have never seen the inside of a running shoe giving seasoned runners advice on running.

Just because you saw the second half of a soccer match back in 1990 doesn't mean you're going to get a call to coach the Kenyan Olympic long distance runners!!!!

More of a trivial annoyance than anything else but find it amusing how some people guard their race times/PB’s as if it’s some sort of life-defining secret….

“So how’d the race go for you on Sunday?”

    “Ahh…not too bad”

“Cool…what kinda time did you do?”

“Ehh…it was in and around my target”

    “Ok….what was your target?”

    “Ahhmm..was aiming for a PB”

    “Nice…what’s your PB again?”

    …..(Silence)
I can be bad for this depending on who I'm talking to. Like if I know someone's 5k PB is around 25 minutes and I'm unhappy with my 20-ish minute run, I don't want to come across as braggy or arrogant by saying "awful, terrible time", I'll just downplay it by saying, "Ah, I did alright".
I'm not an elite running for a place, so I don't want someone else to feel bad about their time by me saying mine was crap.

Maybe I'm overthinking it and people don't care.

Don't feel bad, sure it's all relative...some guys clocking 16 to 18 mins probably do the same to you.

I have a run hijacker. I don't know how it happened. I tried to explain how slow I am, but apparently his issue is heading out too fast so he thinks running with me might slow him down and be of benefit. At first it was grand to have the company, but now he's downloaded Strava and I get an update every two minutes on the distance we've done so far.

When we get back to the office he's all 'yeah we ran three miles today. Twas fairly slow so handy enough anyone could do that pace'. Yeah...That's why you stopped 5 times to tie your lace and HAD to stop to reply to a text half way.

May the running gods have mercy on my coldheartedness but the only reason I'm sticking with him is, he's a competitive mo fo and I'm a wuss with sessions, so when I start them again, I'm hoping to use him as a sparring partner :o

What do you mean by this, actually? Runners who self identify as not pushing themselves? Or runners who some observer would consider are not pushing themselves?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭Puibo

A few weeks ago I heard a guy saying that where he trains he knows where the Strava segments are so between segments he holds back then really goes for it.

Surely this is not proper training. Unless he uses it as fartlek. The way he described it, it sounded like he was just trying to move up in the rankings. Quite sad IMO.

With the recent weather runners still running when it's clearly quite risky with icy footpaths. Fook them....very little sympathy should they break a leg. Would it kill you to wait, or find a safer area to run in?

Of course you are right. They could just train inside, maybe something like mmmmmmm..let see...a boxing ring and get the head boxed of them and maybe end up getting Dementia pugilistica...
I'll take my chance on the footpath...😉

Why would they get into a boxing ring to get get the head boxed off them if they want to go for a run? You've lost me, mate.

I'm only running a year so maybe (hope not) I have to give it time but I honestly can't think of a single thing that annoys me about running or runners.
Absolutely love everything about it and every interaction I've had with other runners.

Can't help feeling if you've got a ton of gripes and things that annoy you about it you're doing it wrong.

    imho.

Ah now, I dunno about that. I run on a busy promenade, and there are very often people running in groups, 3 or 4 across, having full conversations or maybe listening to music (with their heads down), paying no attention to what's in front of them or the fact that they're taking up the entire path. I don't think it's "doing it wrong" to get annoyed by that.

Puzzles me more than annoys me - I'd wear a layer under running top if it's proper baltic but I'd be too warm otherwise

Maybe because you're not that fit?

Seriously though, if I'm out for a long run I'll wear a bit more in the cold as I'm not exerting myself as much as I'd be in a shorter faster run, you can get cool enough otherwise.

    This.

Ran last week's parkrun in a vest and shorts, but wore two tops, a hat and gloves on Sunday on an LSR.

If the clothing of another runner ruins your buzz you're definitely doing it wrong.

I'll wear the tights given half an opportunity, hat and gloves during the warmup. I like to be cosy

Never understood that, suppose some people are just a-holes.

I always try to say hi or thanks to any volunteers ive seen in any races/events i take part in.

About running in general, I annoy me. I was given simple instructions. Stretch and strength exercises to do every day. Did I do them? I did in my sh*te!! It's not even a case of forgetting what the exercises were, I get the them emailed to me after every physio session. It's like the leaving cert all over again tryna cram as many in before the next session in the hope they'll do some good!

Endless training run Garmin pictures on social media! Now I'm all for sharing something momentous for you...be it the first time you have run 5k without stopping or completing a 100 miler. But every 5 mile run around your neighbourhood ...with the obligatory selfie.....don't get it. And virtual medals....I know they shouldn't but they make my blood boil!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭Bluesquare

Experienced runners sandbagging encouraging the not experienced to do stupid things

People who are much better runners then me having no clue of how to train and don't even know if a training schedule has a mistake (tempo speeds way out ) .

Trying to explain to same people how dropping two mins from a 5k pb won't happen in the next three weeks if you just try hard!

Sigh !! Very frustrating !! (Jealous me ! Never!)

Elite athletes turning coach and fleecing folk for crap advice . Same said athletes sandbagging .

drinking with your running buddies when your laid up and can't run .

When at home, I take my parents dog and my sisters dog out running... To an old estate outside the town. Usually plenty of runners there around on Sundays. They do a park run there on Saturdays.

Anyway, I have this 5-6 mile round that I do twice.

I'll be heading out there on Christmas day to do 14-16 mile run.

The dogs will be wreaked for the day and I'll have a massive appetite for Xmas dinner.

I was once 3rd F in a ten k. They said '3rd woman' to me when I crossed the line, so I did wait around as it's not like I win prizes all the time. Then at the prize giving it turned out there were only prizes for 1st and 2nd and I had to slink away as first loser! :-)
