Do you mean that the cyclist couldn't see the car coming from the left because of the van parked in the bike lane?
...or a car pulled out from entrance concealed by parked car in cycle lane and knocked down cyclist who appears to have had right if way.
Either way the van was parked in such a manner that it contributed to the incident. The driver coming from the left should have not pulled out if they could not see properly.

Taxis are definitely clogging up bus lanes in the city centre, especially around College Green. They are going to have to go, at least in some areas. They could I suppose create a new category of bus lane that excludes taxis but not bikes, but I know that allowing non-mass transit to use bus lanes is regarded as a bad idea in other jurisdictions.

As far as I know, the contra-flow bus lane on Stephen's Green East is verboten for taxis: https://goo.gl/maps/52fHeAxCwdDs6xXz9

Likewise the contra-flow on Leeson St (which has a marked cycle lane as well): https://goo.gl/maps/QaRs9rsVpEgypxPq7

However, I'm not sure if this is legally supported:
    Bus Lanes

    32. (1)(a) A bus lane shall be indicated by means of traffic sign number RUS 028 or traffic sign number RUS 029 used in association with traffic sign number RRM 024.

    (b) A contra-flow bus lane shall be indicated by means of traffic sign number RUS 030 used in association with traffic sign number RRM 024.

    (2) A person shall not enter a bus lane with a vehicle other than a large public service vehicle or a pedal cycle during the period of operation of the bus lane indicated on an information plate.

    ...

    (5)(b) Sub-article (2) does not apply to—

    (i) a taxi or a wheelchair accessible taxi which is being used in the course of business, or

Taxis were allowed in bus lanes originally when there was a severely limited number of taxi licences. That's no longer the situation, and it's time to get them out.
I wonder if there are many doing the same as Michael "We should take the cyclists out and shoot them" O'Leary.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_O%27Leary_(businessman)#Registration_of_private_car_as_taxi
Registration of private car as taxi

Michael O'Leary's personal Mercedes-Benz S500, operated by O'Leary Cabs and complete with "for hire" roof bar
In 2004 he purchased a taxi plate for his Mercedes-Benz S-Class, to enable it to be classified as a taxi so that he could legally make use of Dublin's bus lanes to speed up his car journeys around the city.[16] A press report suggested that since he had stopped driving his own taxi, he has employed a driver with full PSV licence. In 2005 the Irish transport minister expressed concern at this abuse by O'Leary and others.

Yes, but sub article 3 says this about contra-flow bus lanes:
    (3) A person shall not enter a contra-flow bus lane with a vehicle other than a large public service vehicle or a pedal cycle.

So taxis are exempt for regular bus lanes under sub-article 2, but prohibited from contra flow under sub-article 3.

That taxis in the contraflow thing really bugs me too!

Thanks. So a change in law would be required to ban PSVs from non-contra-flow lanes.

The north quays from Talbot Bridge to the Rosie Hackett is another set of contra-flow where taxis are banned. Could we just say College Green is one-way towards O'Connell Bridge, and ban taxis from the "contra-flow" bus lane on the other side? :D

I think magicbastarder is being sarcastic in this instance. Oisin O'Connor appeared in a clip in RTE News last week not wearing a helmet and half of Ireland went ape-****.

(I mean no offence to apes).

Is this yet another vague clause that leaves the law open to interpretation?
What exactly is a "large public service vehicle"?

I wonder if the two locks attached to the bike were stolen as well?
Next time, carry the keys and use them.

He had a photograph of the bike just before it was stolen with the locks around frame and bike stand.

Not sure if you're serious but is "SUV taxi" or any size defined in the legislation or simply left as an ambiguous "large PSV"?

    It's a bus. Not a taxi.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,245 ✭✭✭check_six

Probably only left "ambiguous" in the sense that it could incorporate current style buses now, and whatever spider crawler legged vehicles we will use in the near future for moving around the enslaved human population of the earth to work in the mines for the giant space ants. Obviously.

One lock and a noose? That is a good lock, but it only gets two stars from ART. I think the only three-star lock in the orange Kryptonite range is the Series 4, which I think has a thicker shackle.

Anyway, he's very good-humoured about it, as he was about getting piled on last week, at least from what I saw of his Twitter account.
