Gate automation

    Hi all,

Forgive me as I'm sure this has been asked before, but the peoples ideas differ and the advice is sometimes confusing.
I want to fit an over ground system automation kit as the underground one wont work for me, as the gate is hung on hangers. The gate is in 2 leafs, both 7" wide (total opening 14") opening 90' inwards.
Which is better, the ram type or articulated arm (less moving parts, less stress on motor etc) Do they go out of sequence and is it hard to get them back in sequence again without calling out a service engineer?
Also is it worth putting in an induction loop or a GSM function in the system? Is this an unnecessary cost and likely to give trouble in the future.

Or, is there a kit I can buy and fit myself without getting specialised companies involved.

    Thanks,
    CZ

    Hi CZ,
It all depends on the configuration and layout of the existing gates. I would always prefer the Overground Rams against the articulated arm. The Rams generally run smother and are also more robust. The Articulated arms can prove to be a bit of a pain and i have also encountered them damaging easily by kids etc.

In terms of the rams, The unit you will need is determined by a number of factors,

    1. Size and Weight of the Gate
    2. The number of openings and closings in a day.
    3. The Wind force in the area may also need to be taken into account depending on gate type.

I would always suggest that you do get a specialized company involved as if anything happens very few companies would stand over the kit if it wasn't installed by someone qualified but again this is entirely up to yourself.

A would imagine that a kit to suit your gates would probably be looking at €800 plus Vat. That would be a decent system.

    Thanks GatesGuro,

The gates would not be that heavy, I can lift it off the hangers on my own and move them away from the piers no problem. They are 7' long and about 4' 6" at the highest point falling back to 4' and the lowest near the pier. I wouldn't imagine they would be open and closed that often, closed most of the time except for 2 cars to leave and return during the day. Wind shouldn't be a problem as there is a wooded area near by and the site is not that exposed.

Do you think the induction loop is a good idea to be included?

In terms of loops they are a handy feature. There are 2 downsides to them however, First is the cost element. It would increase the cost by 500 -700 as you will have to consaw out the track, lay the cable and you would also have to buy and install a loop card onto the control panel. The other downside is that anyone would have free egress from the house. This reduces the security element of the gates.

Its all a matter of preference however. Horses for courses comes to mind,

OK, I didnt think the loop system would cost that much!! I think I will stick with the fob and maybe the GSM dialler.
Is there any better brands that others? Seems to be a lot of Italian made units on the market but I'd be weary of the quality.

All good advise. Running close to shilling at the moment but not there yet!

Am Italian or Spanish are ok. Something cost effective and reliable would be ERREKA or CAME. I find the Erreka range pretty good to be fair and have put it into a number of homes. seem to work well. What part of the country are you in??
