I'm not keeping score, as I've already missed a week, but I'm guessing with the way this season has gone, this qualifies as knocking it out of the park. I reckon I'm about 50% straight up. Should be able to start having a better picture of who is good from this point on though!

Onto my picks for the week

Cardinals @ 49ers:...How quickly fortunes change in the NFL. Taking Gabbert's 49ers over preseason SB favorites in week 4.
Texans @ Vikings:...Osweiler has shown flashes, but think we will see bad Oweiler against this rush.
Bears @ Colts:...Neither team deserves the pick here, but at least the Bears seem to be playing with some heart.
Jets @ Steelers:...Jets already playing for their season, but Steelers to have another big day.
Titans @ Dolphins:...Titans threw away the game against Texans last week, Dolphins were abject against Cincy.
Eagles @ Lions:...Eagles coming off a bye looked formidible last time out against Steelers. Could be ugly for Lions
Patriots @ Browns:...Brady's back! A nice warm up game to ease him into the season.
Redskins @ Ravens :...Questionmarks over both teams, but think the Ravens do more of the little things right. I'll take them in a close one.
Falcons @ Broncos :...A good test for both teams, Denver will remember what happened the last time a great Offense meets a great Defense
Bengals @ Cowboys:...Bengals will commit to stopping the run and force Dak to beat them, falls short.
Chargers @ Raiders:...I think the Chargers are better than their record suggests, upset win incoming to give their season a spark.
Bills @ Rams:...Should be great game for fans of Defense, Bills a little better with the ball though.
Giants @ Packers:...Giants looked poor against Saints and Vikings and slide will continue at Lambeau.
Buccaneers @ Panthers :...Led by Anderson, Panthers to win easily at home with season on the line.

Anyone know what the story with RedZone on Sky is this week? Presume it's back behind the red button but can see anything on it. A few people have asked the question on twitter but haven't got an answer.

Are they able to pull a switch like that off at such short notice?

Are they able to pull a switch like that off at such short notice?

Well I always assumed that any game can be moved with the NFL having backup plans in place in the event of reasons the game needs to be moved.

the stadium looks fair empty for kick off! the 49ers balck and red uni is class

Gabbert is better than I remember him being last time I really watched the 9ers. Which might be damning with faint praise but he is playing pretty well under lots of pressure tonight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭D9Male

I read this morning that apart from Larry Fitz and Johnson, the Arizona offense only gained 22 yards.

Looks like Chip is thinking of dialling up Kap.

It certainly isn't Gabbert's fault or Carlos Hyde for that matter. They have a poor bunch of receivers. The way Gabbert is playing right now he would be tearing teams apart if he had a couple of decent receiving options I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭D9Male

I didn't think Gabbert played well, but he offered a good dimension to the offence with his legs. A couple of very catchable drops in the first half ensured the Cardinals weren't put under more pressure.

All in all, I kind of agree that QB is low on the list of the 9ers problems right now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭Magico Gonzalez

Gabbert aside, the empty seats in the 49ers stadium is worrying for the NFL. I'm not a big fan of Thurs night football and having an early kick off in one of the worst traffic zones in California is not smart.

That said, it's not the first time SF have failed to fill that Levi Stadium in San Jose. Not sure those silicon valley types are that into the 49ers!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭D9Male

The 9ers are up with the Bears in my book as the most talent-starved team in the NFL. Very few blue-chip players.

Carlos Hyde is about all that springs to mind. Must be kicking himself

It does seem to have been a poorly thought through move. The objective seems to have been to price out the lower income supporters and turn it into an upscale event that appeals to business clients and so on. The problem with that is that without supporters who actually give a crap about the game, there isn't an atmosphere, and without that the business clients don't really feel all that turned on by the event. It is the consequence of people rushing to cash in on the product and in the process forgetting what the product actually is. I know that the emphasis for the NFL has always been the TV audience anyway, but you still need a crowd, it even dampens the experience for a TV viewer when the stadium is dead.

That being said they have to be on Thursday night ball at some stage, so what can you do? Personally I am a fan of Thursday night football because it gives me something to watch on a Thursday evening!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭Magico Gonzalez

Maybe if they pushed the KO back, at least to accommodate the local market.

I know it's all about the East coast tv market, but it seemed ridiculously early to be kicking off in SF (or even Santa Clara).

The TNF games have been poor so far, if you don't count the season opener as TNF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Next two are decent looking games with the Broncos @ Chargers and Bears @ Packers. Some really good games later in the season too.

It most definitely is Gabberts fault imo, he's not good enough simple as. How many simple passes did he throw way too high? One throw up the middle I remember in particular would have been a TD for even an average QB. I can't understand how you can sit Kaep behind him, even if Gabbert is decent with the option play you have to think Kaep picks up much more given the same space.

Seeing as Brady is back do the pats drop a 50 burgers on the tackling dummy's known as the browns defence ?

I'd temper expectations. Number 1, the Browns aren't as bad as their record suggests. And number 2, I'd be surprised if it doesn't take Brady some time to get back up to full speed after a month off, GOAT or not. I still expect the Pats to win mind you, but I don't forsee any 50 burgers.

Cool thanks. Wonder will they continue to have it on there for the season, would certainly help Sky with the hours of live sport they are going to show a week on that channel.

The lions made that opening drive look very easy.

Nice start for the Patriots, this could end up very one sided if the D keeps up what they were doing on the Browns first drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,308 ✭✭✭Pyjamarama

    Eagles so flat so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

    Some nice throws by Kessler.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

So the D didn't keep up what they did on the Browns first drive, very easy for Cleveland there. Looks like it might be a high scoring shootout after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,370 ✭✭✭✭Son Of A Vidic

Disgracefully poor defense from the Pats there to give up the softest of TDs. Then again that's nothing new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,384 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

What the **** are the Eagles D doing ?

No clue, Lions haven't done anything special, 30 yards in penalties given away in that drive too, meaning they only need 50 for the TD.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,162 ✭✭✭letowski

Frank Gore just passed Jim Brown on the all time rushing list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Great drive by the Patriots, Brady imperious as usual.

You seen him going off the field there congratulating all his teammates, that's a real leader right there. Those guys are going to go out and play even harder for him on the next drive.

They're dink and dunking and we're set up for the old school Lions deep stuff. Hopefully Jim can sort it out. Our D has been better in the second half of games this season.
