If I could point out one thing for next time, I found the wooden boards in the bomb hole really dangerous. It might have been my shoes, but even going gingerly through it I nearly ended up on my back a couple of times. Very slippy!

Would some old carpet, or rubber mat, tacked onto the top been better?

Apparently... Sunday 8th Jan, Tollymore Forest Park, Co. Down promoted by Dromara Cycling Club.

Although the UCI CX calendar says that it's in Dublin.

I wouldn't trust the UCI to get anything right.

On a lighter note, I set tonight aside to remove my tubs and prepare the rims before sticking the new set on. Took about 5 minutes to get the tub off the rim and the tape left on the rim came off in one go. No residue left whatsoever. Underside of tub is clean enough and perfectly reusable. God be with the days it would take you hours if not days to get a clean rim again.

    Now I've time for a beer.:D

Just looking at the picture there is it much of a disadvantage using a MTB and do all organisers of B races allow it ?

And yet another boardsie in the video at the link above... :D

On certain courses the main disadvantage of a MTB would be it's weight. You'd be OK on a hardtail but I wouldn't like to race on a full suspension bike. Most organisers allow them in the B race.

Anyone know if entry for the Navan race on Sunday is closed? Tried to enter and pay via the link on their site but I'm getting an error when trying to pay.

It might be a CI site issue. They are updating their system. Navan RC tweeted that it's affecting sign ups but you can register on the morning.

They said on Facebook that the majority of people have not been able to enter online and to pay on the day.

    It is still open
CI updated their system during the week and broke the online registration. You should be able to enter, but they haven't got payments back working yet. We will take entries for all races on the day, as well as payments for pre-entries.

I thought something like that might be the case. Thanks for the heads-up folks. See you Sunday :)

My first time racing Navan and I only fell once and had just 2 mechanicals. So on average, not a bad outing. Bike and rider a bit sore but nothing at all too tragic.
Quite difficult trying to quaff Belgian ale going uphill with a heart rate of 170-ish, but I managed somehow. Just took the one swig on lap 4 and in fact my handling improved thereafter. So chapeau to that.
Smallish numbers didn't detract from the quality of the racing as both the senior men and women's races were a great spectacle I believe.

Navan is always a good day out and very well set up. Great coffee and surprise soup.
I was a bit nervous about the parking capacity, but it all worked out.

I got some video of the American Football Practice, Conroy finish with Squeak bike throw, and the tight finish with the three riders (WORC, Lakeside, Orwell) further down in the A Race.

Any recommendations for mudguards to throw on cx bike when being used on road as winter bike

    Mudguards?

    Meh....

I had one on my road bike that cost a tenner and was fine except it blew off in the wind while carrying it on the bike rack lately
Suck it up. It's nearly January. The Het Volk is in February. The jury is out on mudguards anyway

Check if you have full fender mounts, I was amazed that my new bike does.

Full fenders are amazing, you basically have to do very little cleaning through the winter and your feet stay almost perfectly dry when combined with overshoes.

The only downside I found was that gravel got stuck between the mudguard and tyre and ended up ripping the rear fender in half.

The little piece of thin plastic that sits under the saddle is the job. Doesn't affect the bike in any way but keeps the grit out of you. Appropriately named the asssaver http://ass-savers.com/products/rapha-supercross-munich or make your own

Anyone racing on Sunday in greystones

  • Registered Users Posts: 142 ✭✭SuperSean

Looking forward to the race tomorrow, should be a great day :)
As usual though I'm bringing in a injury from previous races, last week it was a bruised knee, this week's it's a bruised rib lol

Starting to wonder why I think this sport is "fun".

Also wondering has anyone done the 3 peaks cyclocross Challenge in yorkshire before?

    It looks absolutely brutal.
    http://3peakscyclocross.org.uk/course-details/

    Total distance: 61kms (38 miles)
    Road: 28kms (45mins – 1hr 5mins)
    Unsurfaced: 33kms (2hrs 15mins – 4hrs 40mins)
Unrideable: 6kms – 8kms (dependent on individual ability & prevailing conditions)
    Total climbing: 1524m (5000ft)

Might be on the list for next year ;)

Someone from Swords did it in 2014 - http://swordscc.com/3-peaks-cyclocross/

Some of the YouTube videos look dodgy enough, riders going up an down the final climb, Pen-Y,Ghent, side by side on a four foot wide rock bed.

Then you have the Tortour Cyclocross Stage Race in Switzerland in February, which two lads from CyclingWeekly did last year.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvFVufBJmZ0
    Day 1: 20k Prologue, Day 2: 99km - 2500m, Day 3: 90km - 1500m.
