Will Mickelson not playing the Masters help to get him in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

No, it won’t make any difference. Its whether or not Seamus will be in the top 50 in next Monday’s world rankings that will determine whether or not he gets an invite to play in the Masters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,174 ✭✭✭Xander10

If Mickelson is in the top 50 will that open up 51st for the masters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

No. Unlike the Matchplay, where they go down below 64th to fill the field if any of the top 64 decide not to play, it’s only players in the top 50 at the cut off point next Monday who will be invited, along with those who were in the top 50 in the year end rankings last December or those who satisfy the other criteria (winners of majors, etc.). Obviously, there will be a lot of overlap between the different categories.

Shaymie 2 up after 4 against Sun jay IM so a win there would lock up his spot I believe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Scrabbel

Keeping it nice and steady after 11. If he can close this out it’d be a great start. Does anyone know if 1 win would be enough to stay Top 50?

Too many variables at the moment I'd imagine to be certain of anything.

3 up and absolutely burning it up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭Rigor Mortis

    4 up, 5 to play

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭Panrich

    Wins 5 & 4.

Great win, will go a big deal to securing the Augusta invite

Comfortable enough. Enjoys match play . Might be one for the next Ryder Cup. God knows, we need some new options

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Scrabbel

    5&4 v world no.26. Now that’s a great win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,500 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Apparently only needed 1 point to guarantee his place. Nosferatu posted it on Twitter yesterday and he seems to be very on the ball with these things (has had tour players quoting him in interviews).

Edit; he actually had a follow up post to say not guaranteed with 1 point, but would be very unlucky if it was’t enough.

Just saw Seamus' result there, delighted. He'll be full of confidence tomorrow now, great stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭Panrich

Looking at last year, another half point would put him ahead of Mickelson and would get him there for sure. He's going to be buzzing having got a point on the board on his first attempt and that really takes some pressure off for the other two games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

I think the point he earned last night pretty much guarantees that Seamus will move ahead of Mickelson in next week’s rankings. Players who finished on 1 point after the group stages in each of the last two WGC Matchplay Championships earned a fraction over 2 world ranking points and a similar outcome can be expected this time around.

Seamus currently has a total of 95.60 world ranking points versus 95.79 for Phil. Both have played 42 tournaments over the (COVID adjusted) 2 year counting period. This leaves Seamus’s average world ranking points marginally behind Phil’s at 2.2761 vs 2.2806. But the adjustment factor that is applied to points earned more than 3 months previously has been reducing Phil’s total points by around 2 each week, while Seamus’s adjusted points total has been reducing by less than 1 per week on average.

Therefore, Seamus’s adjusted points total next week is likely to be around 1 point higher than Phil’s before we add any points earned by Seamus this week. If we add the minimum of 2 points or thereabouts that Seamus is already guaranteed from last night’s win, his adjusted points total will be almost exactly 3 more than Phil’s. Seamus’s divisor will have gone up from 42 to 43, while Phil’s will have remained unchanged at 42. But the 3 points difference will more than compensate for the increase in divisor as their current average is just over 2.2.

I know that the above margins are relatively small, but there is enough wiggle room in the calculations for me to be able to say with certainty that Seamus will be ahead of Phil in next week’s rankings. Will this guarantee Seamus a place in the Masters? No, it won’t. But it provides an extra safety margin as it would now need 4 people to overtake him in the rankings in order for him to drop out of the top 50.

That's the updated list after round 1. Seamus went to 45 after his win only to be passed by Cam Young after he won. Obviously a worst case scenario for Seamus would be something like Fleetwood, Garcia, Noren etc. all having a great run and picking up lots of points. If he wins today he will be in a strong position to qualify.

Big match against Cantlay today. He can lock up entry to knockout stages with another good showing today.

Not quite. He will have 2 points and will knock Cantlay out but the other 2 in the group could still reach 2 or 2.5 depending on the how their match goes and the final round of matches.

I know there is a lot about his Masters qualification, but based on his play since Pebble, it was good to see such a big win. Obviously I have no idea how he played as opposed to Im a part from the few putts they showed, but maybe he has found something that was missing for the last few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 856 ✭✭✭Limestone1

yes lots of combinations possible. If he had 2 points - for the 3rd round do you want a play a guy who has a chance to qualify or one who has nothing to play for ?

Needs at least a half to keep things in his own hands and if its tied after 3 days there is a straight play off starting at the first hole.

What time is he starting tonight?

I followed most shots on shot tracker and would say Seamus played steady golf.

Sungjae was all over the place really. He lost it more than Seamus winning it but that's the essence of match play.

    Good start today

Looks like some clutch putting so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

2 up now, and it happened a hole after nailing a 15ft putt for a half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Scrabbel

    I made it -4 for the 14 holes, allowing for a 2-putt for a 35-foot concession. That’s pretty good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,498 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

At 18:30 Irish time, it's looking very promising. Power 1 up thru 7 against Cantlay and Im is 3 up thru 6 against Mitchell.

If Power beats Cantlay and Im beats Mitchell then going into the third round, Power would have 2 points, Im 1 point and Cantlay and Mitchell would each have 1/2 a point.

Power already beat Im so does that mean that in the event that the results pan out as above after two rounds, Power would be guaranteed to win the group? Because even if Power loses tomorrow and Im wins, the two of them would be level on 2 points but (because he won the head to head), Power would be declared the winner?

No, it would be a stroke-play sudden death playoff, unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,444 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Think he was -1 thru 11 and 2up. He was 2up after two pars on the first two holes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭Rigor Mortis

2 up after 9. He's unlucky not to be 3 up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Is that not if its a 3 way tie? Think it's H2H if 2 players tied, saw that on Tuesday

Edit: can't find it now, only see reference to the sudden death method

Edit 2: pga site says h2h forv2 way tie https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/wgc-dell-technologies-match-play/volunteer-information/tournament-info/tournament-information.html

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭Panrich

So if he beats Cantlay and Im beats Mitchell then if Cantlay beats Im tomorrow, Seamus would be through no matter how he gets on against Mitchell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

    3up thru 10!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭Panrich

He's made some great clutch putts today. Another 6+ footer for a half at 11.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,498 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

    You're correct........

in the event of a two-way tie in a group, head-to-head results will be used as the tiebreaker; a three-way tie will require a sudden-death playoff

Im (thru 11) and Power (thru 12) both now 3 up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭paulos53

Some mixed messaging from the PGA Tour website. This page says a strokeplay playoff will be used if there is a tie at the top of the group

Cantlay in water in 13. Could be 4 up in a minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Bit annoying that it's all over the place, hopefully might be clarified shortly but would imagine the sudden death is the way it'll go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Cantlay in water on 13, Power in fairway. Cantlay really had to go for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Scrabbel

Interesting, so there’s completely conflicting info on 2 PGA pages. That’s the page I saw alright. And it explicitly refers to 2 players:

”In the event two or more players in a group are equal with the highest point totals, a stroke play hole-by-hole playoff will determine the player that advances to the 16 player, single-elimination matches.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

The tweet I saw (on PGA Communications page), has it corrected to state the sudden death format. Would've been nice to have Power confirmed through today, but at least the points are being got for Augusta

Seamus is in great shape to qualify either way, but I think they got rid of the H2H tiebreaker to avoid so many dead rubbers in the last round of matches.

With a H2H tiebreaker this group would be over already, but without it tomorrow's matches still count. Not what we want, but better all round for spectators, it probably isn't fair to go out to a guy over one hole that you beat over 18 previously, but when was golf ever fair?!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭Panrich

Well looks like he wins 5 & 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭billy3sheets

Wow! 5&4 against Cantlay is some win. Looks like Cantlay fell apart in the end. No coverage whatsoever of the match on Sky 😥
