Help choosing a bike

I bought a new BMW R1200GS Adventure earlier in the year. Did some decent touring on it and it didn't falter. Great bike all round but with all its bells and whistles it's boring. Power delivery is sedate and German.

It's going soon and I'll have 20 odd grand to spend on a new machine. I want something exciting, low maintenance and could maybe do two up touring if needed.

    Any suggestions ?

Z1000sx would be the one for me.

Triumph Explorer/Tiger Xrt would be the first yoke I'd have a go of if I had 20 grand to drop on a machine. Seems to be their GS beater and the triple might have a little more interesting poke (has more horses certainly).

I've seen online that the finish on the Triumph engine is fairly flaky. Even after only a few months. If I was dropping up to 20k on a bike I wouldn't be too happy if it was going like that.

I'd get an R1M and let my pillion take the train. :-)

Apparently it's very tractable and the semi active suspension gives a remarkably pliant ride quality.

Strangely enough, I'm reading up on the MT10SP, certainly ticks all the boxes and has the super fancy suspension from the R1M.

I test drove one a while back and found it even more pedestrian than the GSA

Aprilla Caponord, stunning machine and different. Just stick a new can on it but they are bike porn.

In fairness with your level of buying and selling I would not have taught advice was needed.....lol.

I'm running out of f**king bikes at this stage

I'll check out the Aprillia , they never even crossed my mind

Another absolute stunning bike is the Versys 1000 with all the extras, nothing much to look at but getting so many uber good reviews. Really a top of the range all rounder....

    S1000xr!
    If not a Multistrada.
Although the Capo Nord is a fantastic bit of kit and comes with the most advanced suspension of the 3, performance wise it won't live with the other 2.
    Maybe a better tourer though.

Not ideal at all for touring the MT, savage bike all the same. What about the KTM 1290 GT, originally know as the naked Hayabusa you can get it with a few touring additions. You wont get bored of this I tell ya that....far too quick for 99% of people.

Just sat on the MT10, zero chance a pillion could get onto it. The rear pegs are a hands length from the seat.

KTM is a good alternative as well. I'd like the 1290 Duke SE but it's a little expensive.

Also saw a beautiful 2017 Kawasaki 1400GTR. Not sure if it's a little too sensible though.

Anyway the GS is winging it's way to Ennis as I type this. I'll miss "Daisy" :pac:

Now the fun begins......... do I wait until 2017 or crumble and get something now. The missus said wait until after the NEC show and see if anything catches my eye.

on the visordown article for the mt10sp there's this "The updated base-model MT-10 gets a quick-shifter which Yamaha says ‘gives even more thrilling acceleration through the gearbox’ by momentarily cancelling drive torque when an upshift is detected"

What's the story between that and an everyday quick shifter that just cuts ignition? Or is it the same thing?

Isn't that what they call a "blipper" where it blips the throttle ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,882 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

blipper is on the way down through gears same as you would blip yourself, just wondering what they mean by cancelling drive torque rather than cancelling ignition, could just be the same as normal or it could be some kind of fancy new thing

I don't think it comes with a blipper, the R1M doesn't but I think there's an official aftermarket one, saw baron von grumble video of him on track with r1m and there was definitely no blipper for down the gears

'cancelling drive torque' sounds like a fancy term for clutching in, to me.

it could be something like that, will be interesting to see. There's some funky stuff done with the 1290 superduke to reduce engine braking when letting off the throttle hard where the ride by wire feathers it off more slowly and will leave the throttle cracked slightly open if necessary to keep it from being like dropping the anchors.. There could be some sort computer aided stuff like that with the clutch involved on this too..

or else they just wrote a fancy version of what a normal quickshifter does

I took a trip to Belfast Harley originally to look at a CVO Ultra Super Mega Drive (I think that's what it was called :pac:) , found it very very heavy.

Took a test drive on a bike I've had my eye on for years , the Street Glide. Basically a stripped down slightly tuned tourer. Loved it and the handing and stopping power stunned me. So I put a deposit on it :D

Collecting it next week. Delighted with it and I'll even have some change left over.
