Nut splitters.

Are nut splitters useful for opening those sometimes rusted service cover nuts on oil boilers?
I sometimes have to drill the face of the nut and use a chisel on it for fear of wringing the stud from the boiler.

When they say eg 12mm nut splitter, does that mean the nut on a 12mm bolt (which might be 20mm across), or is it just the opening that the splitter will open to?

I have used my dewalt battery 115mm blade grinder to cut one side of the nut ,a slight tap with a small chisel or old screwdriver and i unscrew the rest of the nut

This is also my preferred way too.
Less stress on a weak bolt. If you use a drill bit the right size the nut should crack by itself giving a perfectly reusable nut with a hairline crack that will not cause future stress or problems on an already weakened bolt. (Weakest spot been the actual weld)

No Cork made boilers were harmed in making this post. :)

""""No Cork made boilers were harmed in making this post. """"

Tried it out on a gerkros first, did you tom? :)
Drilling can be a pain sometimes with the bit waltzing all over the place and trying not to damage the bolt. Better than wringing the bolt though.

Still trying to find out what the stated size of nut breaker refers to. Is a 9-12mm one suitable for the nut on a 12mm bolt or is 12mm the largest opening?

I asked your question to a seller on eBay. The response....

The dimensions refer to the capacity of each splitter as shown in the description

    Dimensions:
    Capacities For Each Tool:
    - Tool 1 - 9mm To 12mm
    - Tool 2 - 12mm To 16mm
    - Tool 3 - 16mm To 22mm.

Does that make you any wiser Dtp. Not me. I still don't know if a 12mm one will fit the nut on a 12 mm bolt. Thanks for asking anyway.

it refers to the opening so 16/22 will open from 16mm min to 22mm max

What size do I need for the nut on a 10mm bolt?
As the yanks say, this is turning into a real ball breaker ;)

You can get little hydraulic ones, have a flat face and are angled

    do M6-M12 ( 10 - 19mm hex nut )

92 euro shipped and without the hydraulic pump. Too steep for something that I would rarely need. Thanks for the link.

Or they'd say this is turnin into a real nut splitter....
I'd say you'd have to measure the nut wearb. They're not all the same. Some will be bigger nuts with the same size bolt

Yes. The chart posted by gctest50 is very useful. I will keep an eye out for the set mentioned by JimF

You don't want a nut splitter to be tight on the circumference of the nut, you need room for nut to split.

Arrived today. Les than a tenner. Got a bargain on Amazon after leaving a similar set in my checkout box without checking out. (Got that tip a while ago).

Hopefully never needed. I did give the small one a try and the chisel part rotated a bit. That was partially my fault because the screw in the outside shaft wasn't screwed into the groove in the chisel far enough. I only discovered this later and didn't try it after adjusting the screw.
I think I will replace the screw with a roll pin. Screw seems too soft.
