Bring New Bicycle from USA to Ireland

    Hi. Thinking about doing this as there are some good deals on MTBs in the US. Cost would be about €3,800, saving about a grand or so on Irish or UK prices. Travelling to the US anyway so flights are sunk cost. Has anyone done this and if so, have you had to pay duties etc at Dublin airport, or any other advice on doing this?

    It certainly has been done and certainly can be done. I'm not sure if everyone would agree with the Kent Brockman tax avoison :) but - people bring empty suitcases to outlet stores, fill em with Hollister clothes and bring them back no problem. They don't open their suitcases and point out the labels on their new jocks to customs upon re-entry. Ditto, I've more than once brought home a laptop or a new mac for my own personal use as part of a trip to the States.

    So, what's the difference between that and bringing an empty bike box over and filling it with a bike for your return trip? A mate of mine did just that years ago - bought a road bike in R&A cycles and took it home with him.

    Yes, if the bike is worth more than €430 have to pay VAT and duty on arrival at the airport.

    Could you cycle it around for a bit , get it dirty and just say its yours and not brand new?

    And while the duty is just on the price of the bike, the VAT is on the entire cost of purchase, including cost of transporting it to Ireland. So they'll add (some or all of )the price of your plane ticket to the pre-VAT amount.

    it's how VAT is calculated on anything you buy in ireland. some people who complain about prices in ireland forget that.

    They won't add VAT on to the airfare. Shipping has VAT applied however they won't add VAT onto the airfare.

    Also don't forget VAT is also on the duty amount so a tax on a tax.
