Ground just gone soft enough here for the weekends job of pulling ragworth:( was too hard to pull it last week. Its like it appeared overnight in some fields the bastard. Share of culls going the weekend, the ones that went down in the blood will be gone in 1.5/2 weeks or so and will be drying off a few autumn calvers as well so stocking rate will drop on milking block a bit, but calves will need an extra bit of ground. Reseed coming on so hopefully grazeable in 3 weeks

Would second cuts not be done by now?

On the weather forums they're saying for the foreseeable and that is usually only 10 days ahead, that there's no sign of any drought now anyway. There'll be fine days here and there but no prolonged dry spell yet. It's not too bad for grass farmers atm.
The aftergrass came back in just at the right time.

I was down in south Wexford and around Kilkenny today and some places would be 19 c and Sun shining and other places complete downpours with showers and nearly floods on the roads and the wipers on full belt.

Greenfields looks to have just enough grass too. Matching the stocking rate to the growth fairly well. Certainly no surpluses.

Edit: the one thing though it would break your heart looking at good land from the roads now being neglected. Up to 5 years ago all land was farmed well and people tried to make a living and had a bit of pride. Now there's docks and ragwort and long grass on land and people don't care.
Easy know they've an income from something else.
    Anyway rant over.
(But you would like to give some people a kick up the hole.)

What's the story with that land across the valley to the right as you come into enniscorthy from the New Ross side? Grand dry ground and nothing being done with it.

That's land belonging to St.Senans mental hospital (now closed).
Government property. There were talks of it being sold to a consortium and a third level campus going on the site.
It was let out last year and silage cut and slurry spread. No activity on the land this year.

Clonroche type soil lying idle. A crying shame.

It's not all clonroche type soil in the county. :p
There's granite underneath that. The same as the granite outcrop of Vinegar Hill.
I don't think clonroche type soil covers granite. But it would still make good land.
The roadstone quarry was just below the hospital. I'm not 100% sure what was in the quarry but it was going for chippings so it wasn't shale anyway.

It's so close to Clonroche, I assumed that's what it has. It's good anyway!

At Croke Park today for the Galway v Kerry and Roscommon v Mayo matches. Fairly nice morning but the weather was fairly bad for the Roscommon game and second half of Galway game.
