I'm nearly sure they did it all in the one appointment the last time too. Makes no sense bringing people back the following day. It's hard enough getting time off work this time of year! You can book into the hospitals in Dublin without a referral from your GP. Just download their form on the website and send it off.
Yes I presumed it would be that way in Cork too, but I rang and checked and you definitely have to go through GP. Why are maternity services not standardised across the country, it's outrageous that your level of care depends on where you live. During my last pregnancy, anamoly scans weren't standard and you had to book one privately if you wanted them. I know some hospitals give them to everyone. I think Cork do offer them as standard now.

Hi all ! Hope everyone is doing ok. Has anyone else experienced little pain or sensivity on the left hand side of the vaginal area??!! I'm sure that's where the embryo is but it's very sensitive!! I can't wait to get this scan on monday.

Hey Orangetaster, I have gotten niggley pains on and off and one sharp pain yesterday in my upper abdomen. I can't remember feeling them last time, but I think the constant nausea meant I couldn't focus on much. But I am the same as you can't wait till Saturday to make sure it's in the right spot and looks ok

No they don't do anything anomaly scan for every pregnancy.

I am getting one- but am high risk.

I just realised that after I posted. Apparently 70% of mum's got them last year but that's likely to be down to 30% this year due to staff shortages 😡

    What is anamoly scan?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭ncmc

It's an in depth scan at around 20 weeks that can show up a lot of abnormalities

    http://corkmotherandbabyscans.ie/scans.php

Then there is a nuchel fold scan that is done 11-14 weeks that can highlight Down syndrome or other chromosome abnormalities.

    Hey Everyone,

Congrats to you all, found out a week & a half ago that I'm pregnant with my second, my little girl just turned 3 so she is only dying for a little brother or sister. I'm living abroad so getting a dating soon for my due date, from my own calculations its 12th July. Can't wait.

Feeling grand, just super tired and I want to cut my boobs off but so far so good. Had a rough pregnancy last time around so I have my fingers crossed I have a better go this time!

Hope everyone is feeling well :-)

Congrats Chuckster! Where do you live? Will be interesting to see how the ante natal care differs!

Girls I know it's early, but all Red Herring maternity clothes are half price in Debenhams. Finding it very hard to find work trousers, I have a black pair already, so was hoping to get a different colour but it's like the Model T, any colour as long as it's black!

I'm in Canada.. had the last one in Australia so I'm interested to see myself haha! A lot of my friends have had their kids here and I've heard nothing but good reports thank God.
I had PGP and a few complications in my last pregnancy so they have referred me straight into the care of a specialist ... no time wasting here! I thought I would just have to wait to see if it happened again, but the docs seem very efficient here, To be fair the healthcare system is brilliant.
Very excited now as I was dying for a second baby but had to wait sue to moving and work etc.

    Congrats Chuckster and welcome!

Heard great things about the maternity care in Canada - my friend is currently having her first in Vancouver and is raving about the care so far!

Congrats Chuckster! Ncmc, I don't think it's too early for maternity wear... I have bought a few bits in the black Friday sales here as I know I couldn't get them as cheap back in Ireland. I saved my maternity wear from last time, but I think some of it might be a bit too small.

  • Registered Users Posts: 443 ✭✭scarbouro

I've had to buy a few bits from H&M and New look. I have a bump already and quite an obvious one! I know you supposedly show quicker on subsequent pregnancies but even my 4 year old daughter has asked Is there a baby in your tummy!! No flies on her! Hard Trying to keep hush till Christmas.

Just had my private scan today! Dates are all correct. So 07/07/2017.. seen a little heartbeat and a head and teeny tiny arm buds! Had to get an internal because I just used the loo before hand. Bit uncomfortable but it had to be done! Have had some sickness the last week and headaches and so tired... hope everyone is doing ok..

  • Registered Users Posts: 443 ✭✭scarbouro

It's so lovely seeing the heartbeat! I had to have all internal ones at the beginning when I had some issues. I had one at 6 weeks but could only see the heartbeat. Looking forward to the my private one on the 23rd of December.

That's great orangetaster. It's so lovely to see the HB.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,753 ✭✭✭comongethappy

Great news orangetaster! I had an early scan on Sat and we could see the heartbeat but couldn't hear it. Going back tomorrow before I go home as she offered to have another try and said the few days can make all the difference.

I had my hubby check the post, and I received a booking appt for 11 Jan in newtownmountkennedy as I am doing the satellite clinic option. I will be nearly 15w along at that point so seems a bit late. Will definitely be booking in a private scan around the 12 week mark.

    Hi ladies,

Great to hear you are all progressing & hearing heartbeats ðŸ˜႒

I basically feel like crap. I've no energy, suffering with terrible nausea. Bought the sea bands so here's hoping they work.

I received a letter for my big scan/meeting with the doc for the 23rd Feb. I'll be 19 weeks then.

I must look into a private scan. Are they expensive and do you have to wait long for an appointment. My last doc could do scans in his surgery!!

E_FTM what hospital are you going to ? I paid €105 for mine in blackrock clinic. Its worth the piece of mind. I had to book it 2 weeks in advance. I feel like **** too. Trying not to spew on clients and my hair is so oily all the time it's plonked on my head! Everything is annoying me today!! Ha! Hormones my husband said! The cheek..

Hey Excited, private scans after 10 weeks are between 120 and 140 so not too bad at all. I found it lovely, they took more time and more relaxed than in a doctors or hospital. Bad to have nausea but hopefully it will pass soon.

I am struggling with heartburn, but no real nausea just feel uncomfortable. Had the rescan today and could hear the heartbeat and see a little bit, my mom loved it. Had my son with this time but he didn't care. Not looking forward to the long flight home tomorrow night but can't wait to be back.

    I'm going to Wexford.

Currently lying in bed, debating whether to actually get up & make myself sick to see if that will help. Sorry if TMI.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭ncmc

Ugh nausea if the worst, hope you feel a bit better today Excited FTM. That's a crazy wait for your first scan, I would definitely book a private one for peace of mind.

  • Registered Users Posts: 443 ✭✭scarbouro

12 week scans are €125 and I got an appointment as close to Christmas as possible so the 23rd of December. I'm going to Blackrock too. I told the girl I'll be only 11+4 and she said it will be grand as I'll be in my 12th week. I like private scans because they are more relaxed, they give you time to take everything in and they
talk through everything that you wouldn't necessarily get at a normal scan.

Ms is back these last few days. The smell of chicken is killing me. It's mainly the only meat I eat but If I get a whiff of it that's it!

Ah you poor thing. I had nausea really badly until I started cariban at 16 weeks. I got so down with it. Awful few months of my life, it completely took over my head and I couldn't feel any sort of excitement or love or warmth towards the baby's.

The only things that I found provided some relief were sucking on boiled sweets and drinking ice cold fruity drinks like blackcurrant. And of course eating little and often so that your stomach is never empty.

I slept constantly too. 12 hours per night. The only time I didn't feel sick was when I was asleep so I tried to just never be awake!

Sorry you are feeling so sick Excited_FTM - my nausea has been on and off - some days good and some days really awful. Not sure how much the bands are working anymore. Really hope you feel better soon.

I'm getting the panaroma test done next week which will include a scan to see if things are as they should be (this will be at 9 weeks). I don't have my first hospital appointment until the 4th of January - I'll be 13 weeks at that stage. My doc reckons I should get a scan done at that point given my age (38 - I'll be considered high risk), but they haven't mentioned anything in the appointment confirmation. When I booked my anomaly scan for 21 weeks I had to book in with a separate department and I asked them if I would also get a scan on my 12 week (13th in reality) appointment - she said I wouldn't with them but that I might get a mini scan with the doctor, but she couldn't guarantee. Should I be insisting on another scan at 12/13 weeks? Or forking out for another private scan, given that I'll have had a scan at 9 weeks? First timer, so all new to me. Any input appreciated!

Its a scan to check that your baby is developing normally - they can detect major abnormalities at that point too. They told me to book it when I booked my first hospital appointment - its in a separate part of the hospital apparently.
