    Expensive utter rubbish.

As much use as stuff guaranteed as used by the SAS or any other secret special ops group who probably don't tell anyone what they use.

Edit> Look at it this way if you have to buy stuff thats advertised for survival and celebrity endorsed you are doing it wrong and may not know what you are doing in the first place. If you can find it cheap enough because its been discounted in a sale and its an item you need then fair enough don't be put off because its got Bear Grylls name on it but don't buy it for the name.

As an example, there are(max)24 aircraft engineers on my shift and one has a Gerber, one has a Victorinox and the rest of us have Leatherman utility tools, both as private purchase and issue kit. M3c is dead right; have a trawl around the army surplus/hardware stores for what you need. Another example is the obsession with Snap-On tools, which are hugely expensive. There are many very good brands out there that will fulfil pretty much every need and don't have to cost the earth.

I have a Victorinox myself works well

S H wan T, but then I have never owned a BG product.

However, for the money the Super Duper Survival Knife is in the same ball park cost wise as a Becker BK2, Enzo Trapper or Ontaria RAT 3

First they came for the socialists...

As a rule I'd be fierce weary of such branded products that appear out of the blue. The producer of the Bear Grylls show probably sent a minion out googling for a crowd out in Wanxi Dong who can make knives for pence and ship em to the West with the logo on it. The markup on them must be something fierce

Same with some branded outdoor clothing; grossly over priced because of association with a celebrity or an event.

    Have to agree,

A cheap'esh Mora knife and any Hatchet light enough to carry will have you rigged out for little expense, I can't for the life of me see why people think BG is a survivalist,
I reckon he would have died many times over if he hadn't had the help of other's, don't get me wrong.. he has learnt a lot from his TV shows and also from other peoples expertise, He get's on my nerves when he tries to make out he has discovered something new... When he most likely seen the boss Ray mears do the same thing,

Anyone getting themselves into prepping would learn much more practical skills to suit situation's they might find themselves in by doing a search on Youtube,

Rather than buying an over priced branded item that people will slag you about in the field Go look at what the real people use, some of it will be real expensive but expensive doesn't always mean good,

Get yourself a Knife and Chopper Then away with you to the forest for a night, By the time you get home "next day" you will know exactly what you need for your next trip. Bring a headlight... Not a €45 BG one, an ALDI €4 one will serve just as good,

I don't think he was even in the military 'proper' even though he makes out he was

I don't think he was even in the military 'proper' even though he makes out he was

He's Army pal's had to save him at least one time, Apparently he forgot to pull his emergency parachute or didn't release his main chute before doing so... something along those lines..He broke his back, Survivor my asp,

There's a massive difference between what we need and what we want

Get what you need and not what you want, I have heard some of the Gerber gear is good, I have never used any of it so could not say it's right or wrong.

Anyway's enjoy yourself... and if the lads start to have a go at you with all your BG outfit.. Just tell them you had to wear it cause your little nephew's all chipped in, Because they know "You the man"

He be selling his own wee as a bear deterrent soon... heard it works great in Ireland. :)

Personally, I'd steer well clear of BG products, in fact, Gerber products in general. They look the part but they don't hold up to abuse in the field. Mora make good quality gear at a fairly low price, Schrade are also a good brand. Mora have just brought out a really good knife in tge Garber, a full tang, stainless steel knife, a little more expensive than their normal fare but in my opinion, definately worth the 100 euro price tag. As for axes Gransfor Bucks are probably tge best out there, lots of choice and at mid range pricing, Hultafors also make really good axes and cheaper still, Schrade also do some good axes.
