My friend is a Bar owner in London and is looking to open a bar in Galway. He wants it to be a prohibition style bar/speakeasy like you see in London but he also doesn't want to spend 100k on a pub license which he says he doesn't need due to Galway based publicans being allowed do what they like ie Mcgettigans/Monroes/Garavans

I think he is absolutely crazy but my question is will he go straight to jail for this or is there any truth in his claims of "getting away with it"?

apparently there's loads of bars operating without a license/serving until 3am/smoking inside/having "lock ins"

There must be something else that needs to be done in order to have all those liberties with the law of the land.

Your friend is a pipe dreamer talking the big talk to impress.

He's never going to open anything without a pub licence.

Sheeben closed near here few years ago, small place only frequented by maybe 15-20 locals.

Still, there was a prosecution made.

He does talk the big talk but he has big balls and a brass neck and loads of cash which make for a dangerous combo...

The law is there for a reason, this isn't the place to discuss trying to get around it or make accusations of other bars doing so.
