    Guys

Any recommendation on a moderator for Rugar Precision Rifle .308.

I have been using a Wildcat Evo on my 223 and am quite happy with it however there is a handguard on the RPR and very little of the barrel is showing. I don't think over barrel moderators will be able to fit.

Heading over to the RFD this evening with my 223 EVO to try measure it up, but the dealer doesn't think it will fit, only about 3-4" of the barrel is actually showing past the handguard.

It will mainly be at the range to weight isn't a huge problem

    Thanks in advance.

According to the website the barrel for the 308 is 20" and the rifle comes with a precision short handguard at 15". Allowing for a little discrepancy that should still leave 4" comfortably.

The majority of over barrel suppressors, according to their various websites, are between 80 to 100 mm back along the barrel. Only a few, usually magnum calibre ones, are 120 mm.

So getting a nice compact looking suppressor should not be a problem.

I'd look at the new A-Tec Hertz. They are slightly cheaper than the rest or on a par, but do not require specialist tools to take apart and do strip down for easy cleaning.

There are the usual suspects of Wildcat, Hausken, T8, and then the muzzle mounted Ase such as the S5, Jet-z compact, etc. Most are in or around the €300 - €350 mark.

I was looking at the ASE Utra SL5i but it seems you can only get it in stainless steel colour over here.

Is there anywhere around that can paint it black, I assume you need some fairly good paint that will handle the heat.

    Any ideas

Just seen this on Halfords website, any used it.

High temperature paint good to 500 Celsius, black matte finish

Or better still, a named brand which is good up to 800 celsius.

Painting one will always be a risk but I'd go with cerakote/duracoat type solution, few guys here who do it. If you paint it a dark colour I think you'll be grand.

    Torture test here:

Thanks guys, think I going to have to wait until I have the rifle in my hands.

The A-Tec Hertz looks like a nice moderator and will look well on the rifle. It also only covers the barrel by 80mm (3.1"). I hoping there is at least that much barrel showing past the handguard.

I know the barrel in 20" and the handguard in 15", but last night I look at the rifle (forgot a measure tape), but there is definitely not 5" showing.

Not the Halfords stuff but i did buy and use a can of stove paint. It was a matt finish to prevent reflection off the mod as well as high temperature resistant.

Hasn't peeled or flaked off yet. That said i did sand the mod, apply a primer and give it a few coats.

No rifle barrel ever really looks the length they say.

I'll explain. Most people measure from the action to the muzzle. The thing is your barrel has to go into the action to allow for the chamber, bolt, cycling, etc.. So you can "loose" between 3/4" to 1.25" (more depending on chambering) of the barrel length inside the action. So your 20" barrel is 20", but only 18.5-19" of it is "outside" the action. So take the handguard length from that and you end up with 3.5 - 4" of barrel protruding from the hand guard.

3.5" is 89 mm, and 4" is 102 mm. So when looking at suppressors this is the number you need to keep in mind. Also check that the design of the suppressor is not such that the bit that faces the action is of such a shape as to extend the actual length over the barrel. Does that make sense? IOW make sure the "back" of the Mod is flat and not shaped that it might extend the overall length over the barrel by an extra few mills and cause it not to fit.

I was reading up on the A-Tec Hertz, is seems fairly flat on both ends and their site says in over hangs the barrel by 80mm, so I'm hoping that will do the trick.

The problem is ordering one and then if it doesn't fit :(

I'm nearly sure Atlantic Sports in Carlow have them in stock. They might be worth a call and see if it fits.
